Not an unsusual occurance Paul.

Last week I was in Ben Bridge in Calsbad (I'm sure you know the place) to drop off my Pepsi GMT Master for an appraisal (for insurance purposes) & Raj (my jeweler) persuaded me to check out a TT GMTIIC when another customer jumped in our conversation & stated that only fools would pay that much for a watch. Raj & I just looked at each other, wondering what business this person had in our conversation.

Not to be rude, I asked him what he was purchasing & he stated that he was there to pick up a Tissot T-touch Navigator. I said "nice watch" & asked him how much. He proudly stated that it was $425. "Wow", I said. "Does that Tissot keep better time than the Casio that is being sold for about $100 at the kiosk just outside the store."

Hmmm - funny he just had this disgusted look on his face & "STFU" the rest of the time I was there. I do believe that the moron was actually intelligent enough to get my point.

Yup! Raj, Heather, & Marylou are just awesome. Don't care too much for Leo though! UTC is a very nice place, I'm there often as my uncle lives close by.

You may already know of the place, but the Swiss Watch Gallery off of Villa LaJolla Drive (next to BJ's & across TGIF) has a great selection as well. Ask for Yolanda.

Paul - make sure Oscar takes his happy pills! He's wanting to punch people again!

I think that I would have said something along the lines of, "Wow, you can get an alarm in a watch for $29.00? Modern technology is really amazing. Wow! My alarm watch cost way more than my Rolex. I'll have to look into that. Thanks."
That would have slowed him down a bit, at least long enough to slip away.
This kind of thing is why I don't go to many parties outside of my social circle. People are always jealous of what others have, and I don't have any time or patience for that kind of thing. As for me, I fill up the Rover next to the Ferrari/Maserati dealer every week, sometimes I think that could be me... I suppose it really could, but I would like to remain married, retire before I die, and the kids have to go to college. And a Maserati is just not good enough, it would have to be the new Aston Martin Rapide! Only about $225K.
Regards,
Brian

As for a comeback, something along the lines of...."I think, without being to rude about it, that you are getting me mixed up with someone who actually cares about your opinions"...can do the trick....

I have posted this before (actually on one of your previous threads on this subject Paul) but it really happened so I will post it again.....

I was once severely verbally accused of being an idiot with my money for buying a Rolex watch by a (not very well liked) guy who I worked with, it shocked a lot of the folk around the office which was pretty small, only around 12 or 15 of us there. I took the attack on the chin and didn't put up much of a fight, but what I did do was explain essentially what is quoted above. I also proceeded to try and get the guy's confidence and try and find out what his 'vice' was. Unbeknown to him the whole office was listening in on our conversation which had gone pretty quiet and what he assumed was now a one to one. Eventually he admitted that if he came into big money he would buy this very special train set made in Germany which was very rare and very expensive. You can imagine, the office errupted in laughter.....all except me....I just sat with a smug grin on my face happy in the knowledge that this idiot had been tricked by his own tongue.....that happened in November 1990 and I have never forgotten it, neither have some of the guys I worked with back then....it's sometimes brought up when we meet up every once in a while....

People will spend a million dollars on a comic book or baseball card. They will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for an antique chair, does that chair take you to the heavens when you sit in it? People spend millions on ugly art. People spend millions on old cars with no stereos or airbags or traction control. People spend millions on a diamond cause its blue, or red. People spend thousands on a set of high end knives. People spend............................................. ............it never ends. What difference is a watch? You can reduce any consumer item to its core function, but you cant reduce the driving force behind these purchases. If this guy was truly right and everyone felt that way there would be no Rolex. Rolex exists because there are many people that do "get it" The funny thing is, because we get it and they don't......it makes us feel better at the end of the day.

Oh, tell him your sorry that he got sand in his vagina as it must be quite uncomfortable.

The rationale for his behavior (aside from being obxious about it) is quite obvious and common. Some people buy watches simply to tell time and a dollar spend doing anything more than that is a dollar wasted in their view. Of course, everyone has some hobby, which by definition is money spend that need not be. He just doesn't share yours. Some reason people buy Honda Accords to get back and forth to work while others buy Porches.

Just buy what what you like. You'll be disappointed if you require the approval of others.
Take it easy Matt, that post made sense.

This is quite the same story: ten days ago I was dining with my brother-in-law, who noticed my quite new GMT IIc and asked me if I was really thinking that my watch was so much better than is fake GMT Pepsi that he had bought several years ago on a trip in the Far East...

Now, if looks could kill, now I'd have a free sit place at the table, an my wife's sister would be very sad, but I was so astonished by his (serious) question, that I had to bite my lips not to produce any harsh kind of answer!

The problem is that his fake was lying non-working somewhere, since its heart stopped beating 1 month after the purchase, when the pepsi bezel was as faded and discoloured as a can of real pepsi poured into a large swimming pool...

How can some people do conceive such stupid and useless question? Just to look smarter? To offend you? Can't tell, but a quick smile and the full ignoring of his dumb question helped to save the peace of a family dinner!

Any body that makes these comments is insecure and jealous or just plain ignorant. So next time you here a comment like that be prepared and have an answer that leaves you feeling better instead of mad enough to post it here.
example= how is your real Rolex bettter than my china town copy they look very similar.=Some people have to fake it until they make it I guess your still trying.
Dont you feel stupid you spent 10k on a watch that I bought for $100 in china town that looks the same to me.=No I got it to spend and I want the real thing you must be still pretending to be somebody dont give up my friend it will happen someday.Let me know when your ready to buy a real watch I can point you in the right direction.
Always answer with a smile and a laugh respect is something you earn.People that make these comments dont usually respect anybody not even themselves.
Jealous insecure people are usually very thrifty or cheap.

i can bet that capitan idiota (captain idiot) have something else that he spend money on, itrs true that we have to re-set the time ever 2 weeks, but thats what is what we like, we love watches, we love cleaning them, maintaining them and puting the correct date every month that ends the 30th, every person who bought a Rolex or such, loves watches and the history in each one of them.

Well you get that everywhere , I think it is out of frustration/jealousy , those type of people prefer to bring down the things they unable to obtain themselves. Only a couple of weeks ago I attended a funeral of a relative , there were quite a few people there with very expensive and fast cars . At the end of the lunch do a couple of us stayed behind as we don't see each other that often , and my uncle's DB9 , one cousins Porsche Turbo another Lambo Gallardo and about 2 bentley GT to name the top ones , at one stage a guy approched us ( found out later that he works in a bank and he was there to pick up his wife working as a waitress) and started to say what kind of idiots they all were to spend that money on a car and that he in his cheap car gets as fast as them from AtoB because of the speedlimits ... only to loose that much money when you sell it , lose all your points on driving licence ectect blablabla. Exacly the same , all those people there with their fast expensive cars put in 15 hours work a day and if they want to spend their hard earned cash on such ítems its OK and no frustrated little pencil pusher should comment on it . None of us said anything about his Fiat Brava .

I tell people that women usually have many pieces of jewelery and men usually don't, other than a watch and a wedding band. If the only physical adornment I have is a watch, then its ok to spend a bit more to make it a nice one. Collectively, the womans jewelery probably costs a considerable amount more than your average Rolex so why not spend a few thousand on the only piece of jewelery I'm going to wear.

I've had to deal with this situation several times previously and here's my response: "Well, it's the same thing with cars ... a Chrysler can get you from point A to point B, but a Mercedes will get you there IN STYLE." Works every time.

As some have said it is envy. Envy is the strongest and worst thing to have around you. When I encounter a moron like that, I simply laugh it off and say it is a fake. Usually gets rid of them quickly.

I have friends that pay thousands to kart race. Others that spend $1500 of a paintball gun. $7,000 on an ATV.

All of the above, I find ridiculous. They think I'm crazy for paying more than $200 on a watch. But we don't CRITICIZE each other. We joke about and laugh at how much we spend on silly things. But thats just it. A watch, a gun, a car all silly things that you dont need. YOU SIMPLY WANT THEM. And who is anyone to opine on what you want and how much you spend on what you WANT????

These people piss me off. If I were with a few drinks.... I might have said "Go pay attention to your wife, I think I just saw the bartender sticking his tongue down her throat". And that's because I am a happy drunk!!!!

Regarding complications a Rolex pales in comparison to many Timex's. Essentially if you compare a current Timex with any Rolex in terms of "performance" a Rolex looks pitiful on paper.
In today's world the time is everywhere you look, in fact it is always in the upper right corner of my Mac. I wear a Rolex simply because it is the only piece of "jewelry" that appeals to me.
The understanding that I have a "Micro-Machine" on my wrist with all those little wheels, springs, and other assorted mechanical gizmos spinning around inside there is what makes this piece of "jewelry" appeal to me. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing a gold chain on my neck or some tacky ring on my hand. Now put a Rolex on my wrist and I have one of the most beautiful pieces of jewelry you can own. The watch can be seen from 20-30 feet away yet it looks tasteful. And the best part is that every once in awhile I remember that I can see what time it is by using my Rolex.
I always tell anyone who is getting married to give the wife a Rolex instead of a diamond ring. If not for De Beers and their brilliant marketing strategy at the turn of the 20'th century everyone may be giving each other a Rolex when getting married. "This watch is to show that I will be with you till the end of time" or some other marketing strategy could have put a Rolex on every married woman's wrist!

I would MUCH rather have a rolex than a silly old diamond ring anyday!

I've lost and/or broken MANY rings, only lost one watch (my tag), but found it 6 months later!
