I was going to compare it to shoe size, but yeah, to say that there’s a universal perfect size is ridiculous. Me wearing a 36mm watch would be like me trying to shove my size 12 foot into a size 9 shoe. It’s one thing to say that Xmm is a size that fits well on most people, but to say that one specific size is perfect is, as you rightly pointed out, nonsense.

Perfect size is relative. My shoe size is perfect for me, not for everyone.

A size 9 shoe will not fit on a size 13 foot, but a 34mm watch will fit on an 8" wrist . . . .

Looks nice on you, for me the rare 43mm is the perfect size.

There are many factors here that make one man’s perfect another man’s not so perfect. Obviously a skinny wrist or very thick wrist might not pull off a certain size but the style of the watch and the taste of the wearer makes a big difference. For example if you see your self as a bit of a hollywood action hero then you might favour the big brash sporty watch style and wear clothes to match. But if you see yourself as the suave and sophisticated gentlemen then you may favour a smaller more discreet watch with a more dress watch style. One of the things about the DJ36 is that for the majority of people is can be dressed up or down, suit or jeans, it looks very good which gives it a great versatility. Part of the appeal is how understated they can be. For a while watch sizes grew with the fashion for dress down and sports wear. That era has now been replaced by the freedom to mix up the styles and sizes for a more individual look. We don’t all have to dress like American teenagers as has become the Worldwide normal.

A little small for my taste, but if you like it that's all that matters. I think 39-42 is the sweet spot, with 40 being about perfect for a sports watch. For a dress watch I like 37-39. But to each his/her own.

I’m 6’0”, 210lbs with a 7.25” wrist and I think 36mm is darn near perfect. I split time between the Datejust 36 and Speedmaster Professional. I’ve had the Speedy for 3 years and got the Datejust only 2 months ago and it’s funny how big the Speedy now feels when it’s on.

I prefer the legibibility of 40mm + models- to me watches are more of a tool than anything else. 36 feels too much like just a piece of jewelry and is small for my 7" wrist.

I think, 34-36 are the perfect fit, especially 36, they are just in between, somewhere in the middle if i may say.

I take the Original Posters question as simply a desire to talk about a watch he is passionate about. I don't believe the word perfect is important to the posting.

I recently got a new Oyster Perpetual 36mm white dial watch. I am loving this watch. The white dial is well done and its aesthetics appeal to me. The smaller size also is a refreshing change from 40+mm watches.

One of the features of the 36mm Oyster Perpetual is the use of twin indicies at 3-6-9. This feature seems to be one that is a source of criticisms of the watch. I find that the twin indicies provide a great set of reflective surfaces and as the watch is moved around, the gold markers are just fantastic.

On a historical note, I have a Rolex from each year of the 1950s. Most of these vintage watches are either 34mm or 36mm and most of them also have the twin indicies at 3-6-9. I think it is great of Rolex to pay homage to these vintage watches and by doing so, I think the 36mm Oyster Perpetual has a special place in the Rolex lineup. In fact, I see the Oyster Perpetual as the successor to the Everest watch, not the Explorer. I have a 1950 and 1953 Rolex watches which have all of the design features of the Everest watch. In fact, the 1953 even has the same red lettering and my guess is that this watch came from the same assembly line as Hillary's watch. I see the 36mm Oyster Perpetual as the modern version of the Mount Everest watch. Not only does it have a historical connection to one of Rolex's shinning moments, but since there is a negative bias towards this line, the Oyster Perpetuals are priced reasonably. I am sure the Rolex uses the same machining tolerances on all cases, bracelets, and movements. So charging triple for a watch due to its dial layout strikes me as silly. But for Rolex this works well and they are quite successful. So good for us that one of the best of the Rolex lineup is also one of the least expensive, yet with all the quality of manufacture as watches costing upwards of $35,000.

I'm perfectly fine with larger size Rolexes as I'm about 5'9 (175cm) and 7.5inch (19cm) wrist and I even comfortably wear the chunky 44.8mm Seiko Astron Dual Time.

Last week I bought my first 36mm Rolexes (DJ1601, DJ16014 and DD1803) and having worn all these 3 in rotation for about a week, I started to question if 36mm is indeed the sweet spot, at least that's how I feel.

At first 36mm feels a tad small compare to my SD43 for the first day or so but after the third day, I've grown comfortable, in fact more comfortable with the 36mm and not sure if I'd look forward to be wearing my 42-43mm Rolexes anymore.

Anybody else have the same feeling? If yes please share some photos of your 36mm Rolexes.

No, 36 is just too small for me. I prefer 38.5 to 41 (and will make exception for a sport watch up to 43 if the case height is not too tall).

Somehow for a DD yes, but for a DJ size does not matter.

Love your 16014 with the linen dial! I have the exact same watch. That dial is the bomb!

I wore a 39.5mm Aqua Terra with a black dial. I thought it was the perfect size.
But slowly am itch came over me to try something smaller.
Then I switched it up for a 36mm Datejust with a silver dial. I now think this is the truly perfect size.

So tastes change, but In general, the older I get, the more curious I am about small watches.

Too small for me.
They look like kids watches on my wrist.
Had a 36 once and decided it must go as I was never really comfortable with it.
