hello freinds,
after reading a thread about fashioable wrist watches and sizes

1) do you think (36mm DJ) and (40mm sub) will still be versatile and fashionable or they are dead now after the new styles and 41,42,43 mm's?????

2) why do people keep saying the sub become bigger? i thought both were 40mm.

IMHO, 40mm is perfect for sport and 36 is perfect for dress. The big watch thing is just what the current trend is, who knows if it will last or not.

As far as the bigger subs, it is assumed that the sub will get the new maxi case like the GMT II next year at Basel.

I think they will stand the test of time. They are traditional rolex after all. They have already released the white gold and two tone submariners with the larger cases, so most people assume the ss versions will follow these two.

Agree. I think Patek is about the only one that can get away with making mens watches in 37mm cases - and always will.

Fashion is cyclical...those silly pants you wore a decade or two ago come back in style right...same thing with watches.

I think the 36mm and 40mm are here to stay. According to my AD, they are getting a lot more requests for the smaller watches now. I think 42mm is as big as I would ever want to go, and I have gone bigger. The 45mm Breitling Seawolf - at 18.5mm thick! - was my last Breitling. The 36mm Omega Seamaster Pro that replaces it, really is a lot more comfortable.
I also like to see some strap/bracelet at the top of the wrist. I think that is a part of the watch, too. And there are some beauties out there!
Tried a 36mm Explorer I on last weekend, and was perfect. The 40mm GMTIIc is also 40mm, very comfortable, but it still has the wrist presence. The 34mm and 36mm - and even smaller - have been around for decades, and I think are here to stay.

I too have gone huge. Breitling Super Avenger 48mm, Motors T 49mm, 6.75 also at 49mm. Now all but 2 of my watches are 40mm and that is as big as I want them.

I think 36mm is here to stay, hence DJ 1 and DJ 2. I think bigger sizes are also here to stay, people are slowly but surely getting bigger. I can't picture a basket ball star wearing anything smaller then a 40mm that's for sure.

Rolex is a tool, nothing fashionable...since 1915 what ever this watch company
has produced, was made for function rather than fashion.
In the past 3-4 decades we have seen some BS looking diamond clad jobs
but.. most remain unsold and the small percentage involved is of no consequence

The biggest problem for these larger size 40mm and up is making them comfortable to wear day in day out.

The watch case designers sometimes put the crown at other than @ 3 and use lighter band materials.

The additional weight and size makes easier for the watch get banged and leave nice red marks on your wrist when you take it off, I for one tried larger sizes and most can not be worn in comfort! but their are many bigger people out their that can easily handle these bigger sizes without any problems.

The fashion watch designers knows that we are getting taller and bigger, they are making a bigger size watches for bigger size people and of course many young hip hop culture also like bigger size pretty much in anything they wear or drive.

I have been wearing my new Explorer 14270 and my AirKing 14000 daily since I purchased them recently. I used to be a 40mm+ guy wearing only Subs, GMT Masters and the Planet Ocean. The 14270 and the 14000 are basically the same size for all intents and purposes give or take the two millimeters. They are so comfortable! I was at work the other night and for a moment actually thought I'd forgotten to put on a watch!

Oh and the compliments. No one has ever mentioned my Planet Ocean or my Submariner but the Explorer is almost constantly noticed. I don't know if that's just my luck or what.

For anything bigger than 40MM to make it into the dress clothing world the Shirt makers will have to add another 1/2 inch to the standard diameter of the sleave and maybe ad a third button or additional link hole.

I don't think the 36 DJ will ever go out of style. Sports watches like the Sub and GMT IIc need to be bigger because of their function. Dress watches like the DJ are perfectly proportioned for their function. That's my humble opinion. I have a DJ, an LV sub, and a GMt IIc and I enjoy and use them all but the DJ is the one I reach for when we are going to a nice restaurant or when I have a business meeting.

36mm and 40mm will remain very popular for a long time. 46mm and 48mm, for example, are still going to be sizes that risk going out of favor, IMO. When is the last time you saw someone in the office, with a short sleeve shirt, wearing a really large watch?

Nice watches, but they risk being too eye catching for most of us. In a non-outdoors or sport setting, the larger watches can look out of place.

Since i collect watches outside of rolex i have come to find out it depends on the persons size in stature that makes the watch look nice , for example.

A 40mm watch speaks volumes in a corporate setting or just maybe a everyday polo and dress slacks look.

When going sport with a jogging suit or sweater 47mm watches look pretty darn good

All and all it depends on the person , you don't buy a 47mm watch with a clown look to it!
I have an invicta pro diver 47mm with a very elegant look to it and it compliments my polo accents as well as my jogging suits or sports attire.

Just remember when purchasing a 47mm that it depends upon your size and stature how it would really look, i would not recommend a 47mm for a smaller guy.

Watches aren't quite the same. I can't think of an instance where watches were bigger in the past (minus pocketwatches). They have been slowly getting bigger and bigger over the past 100 years. Not a cycle, but a slow slope.

Now there is a limit to how big they can get for sure.

I think 40mm will be fine for a LONG time.

Fashionable is the kind of term that in itself implies the conclusion; i.e., that they will go out of style. I don't agree with that take generally on high end watches (and I'm including Rolex in this category). The thing about high end watches, at least in my mind, is they are so expensive most people probably buy them for the long term; not for the fashion of the moment; and thus I think classic watch sizes and designs that have stood the test of time (sorry for the pun!) will continue to appeal to most people in the market for a high end watch. The really big watches will likely be niche watches for larger people, people who just like large watches, and WIS like us who always "need" to have the latest thing.

A lot of us on this forum are the first to obsess on getting the latest thing from Rolex, and we tend to have temporary watch collections, always changing. We are fashionistas in a WIS way.
