About to purchase SS Sub Date M-Serial from a private, any tips & advise?
Hi all,
I am about to take a leap on to the real Rollie world, after wearing a replica for a few months. For me it was always clear that I would jump into the genuine bandwagon, if the hobby took over. And it did. I am looking into buying a new M-Serial SS Sub Date from a private collector. The seller is very reputable, and I have no reason to suspect anything. I do think of myself as somewhat knowledgeable already on telling the difference between a rep and a gen. Nonetheless, is there any specific advise you would like to offer to me on perhaps not as much as for controlling the authenticity of the watch, but rather for ensuring that the watch is in a good mechanical condition. It should be brand new, but I just want to make sure it is totally fine. Am even considering of taking it to an AD for a quick checkup. Haven't decided yet. Of course, any tips on the authenticity side (although I think I know all of the more common stuff) are welcome as well. Many thanks from a former lurker - Rollieboy |

Make sure all the #s (on the warranty card and the watch) check out.
You seem 100% confident in the seller, so you should be good. Post some pics when you get it.

Take it to an AD for verification and check the movement.. besides the usual visual inspection...

Once you have the real deal on your wrist, take a hammer to that fake.

Hi all and thanks for all the tips!
I am familiar with DavidSW's excellent track record. It's just that I'm in EU, so obviously customs etc. would really be a blow under the belt, should the watch get "caught" there. So it's a lot cheaper for me to buy from inside EU. Feel free to suggest any great guys selling in EU though. - Rollieboy |

I would get the seller to agree that you can take the watch to a reputable watchmaker or AD to get the watch authenticated. And have a return agreement based on satisfactory condition and examination.
I personally wouldn't want to buy a high end watch without the proper box, factory tags, (the official Rolex tags in this case) the official Cosc Pamplet, Owners Manual, And the warranty card. An original receipt would be good also, if you can get it. If the serial number on the warranty card matches the serial number on your watch your pretty well on your way. There are a few checks that you can perform to help validate Authenticity, if you have any doubts, you certainly owe it to yourself to get an AD to authenticate the watch. I found this website quite helpful and informative. http://www.oysterinfo.de/en/index.php Someone on this forum made a very meaningful statement about who you buy from. "Buy the seller", that is the best way to prevent being taken. There are some pretty damn good fakes on you tube that scare me to death. Thankfully I haven't seen one like mine that functions properly. Good luck. I hope everything works out for you.......... Last edited by dmc; 8 December 2009 at 01:42 PM.. Reason: spelling |

If the seller is reputable, there shouldn't be any issues. Follow the advice from the other posts and you should be "good to go."
