New poster/owner
Nice to meet you all.
Just got my first Rolex. Never thought I was a 'Rolex guy'. Always a big fan of watches and did admire the Rolex from afar, but never coveted them. Until my wife got me one for my birthday and I slipped it on my wrist.... Love, love, love my new Datejust. |

Thanks much for the warm welcome!
I found out the hard way that its not so easy taking a picture of a watch - let alone one that will do it justice. Anyway here's mine... Mailman - I'm not physically in upstate NY, that's just where my heart is. I'm an alum. My body is in southeastern Connecticut. I do know Dinosaurs when I see them though. |

See, that's what happens. You get so wrapped up in hijacking a thread, you forget why it was started in the first place.

Hey Orangeman,
You are soooooo lucky to have a wife give you a DJ as a present! Enjoy it man. I love those dials with concentric circles in them... adds a dimension to the dial... similar to the Seamaster waves. Congrats again and be-lated happy bday.

Thanks again for the welcomes and compliments.
For future reference - don't ever worry about offending me - I've got pretty thick skin. It'll take a lot more than calling me a 'tosser' to get under it. The 'DJ' has an interesting story actually. Interesting to me anyway... My wife wanted to get me the watch, but I was reluctant to have her spend that kind of $$. She was determined so I went and looked at a few models. I live in Connecticut but work in New York City so I told her that I would go to an authorized dealer near my office and see if there were any models that I liked. Once I saw that face and that style I told her that was the one. Ultimately the one that I got was the one I wanted. Somehow though, in between explaining to her exactly what I liked and her going to get it, we got our signals crossed and she bought the same watch but without the concentric circle face and with Roman numerals (why do Rolexes use 'IIII' instead of 'IV' by the way?). She bought the watch in Connecticut. When it became apparent that it wasn't the same watch she told me to go to the place in the City, buy the one I wanted and then we'd return the one she bought. This actually worked in our favor because if you buy in New York and have it shipped out of state they don't charge you sales tax. You're still responsible for it but..... So I knew off the bat we'd save some moolah doing it this way. The wife paid $5250.00 including tax of about $300.00 when she bought in Connecticut. I go into the store in NYC and grab the DJ I want. The tag on it says $4950 - same price my wife paid - I say to the guy '$4950?' He says 'well, no, it's actually $4450'. 'Really? Wow, that's great' is my reply. Without any prompting from me, the guy says 'But we can do better than that.' Now I'm thinking that I'm going to have the baby shipped anyway so I'm saving the tax AND he's just cut $500 bills off the top, NOW he wants to bargain ME down?! Great. 'You can? How much better?' 'I can give it to you for $4,000.00'. I thought for about a milisecond before I said 'Deal.' So I got the same watch that my wife paid $5250.00 for for $4000.00 plus $25 shipping. I bought it from an authorized dealer and have all the papers, warranty, etc. $1200 difference! When I went and returned the other watch in Connecticut, they were none too happy about how much they were undercut. |

Nicely done! You can't just wear a bargain, you gotta tell others about it. LOLOLOL
BTW, Rolex uses the IIII instead of the IV because the IV could be mistaken for a VI on the dial, at certain angles. It actually is a watchmaker/clockmaker tradition that goes back a few hundred years. But I prefer arabics. They're bold and no mistaking at all. |
