So today I put down a holding deposit on a .....
.... brand spanking new Submariner 16610LV!!
(AD's holding it for me for three months until I get my 'loyalty points' allocated & then I'll top up the balance with cash). As some of you already know my ongoing plan here is to also buy a 16610 in the next quarter & the watches will eventually be passed down to my sons. But here's the kicker......... While I was in there I tried on two Omega Planet Oceans (45.5mm.... straight black bezel/black & white face and also the orange bezel/red quarter numbers) & 'loyalty points discount' or not I simply can't see that the Rolex is worth TWO Planet Oceans. Now fellas don't burn me here OK?! I'm historically one of THE biggest Rolex devotees & I only 'down-graded' to Omegas when my business hit hard times & we desperately needed all the cash we could get..... But guys...... seriously...... Have you tried on & closely inspected those Planet Oceans????? They really ARE beautiful & they have a HUGE 'presence' about them & that coated glass really is some clever ........ but as much as I LOVE & hanker after a coupla Roly's again I really can't see how ONE Sub's worth TWO P.O.'s........ Can YOU????? (& Guys I'd LOVE you to sway me back again 'cos leavin' my boys an Omega [no matter how cool & great a value they were] just don't hit my sweet-spot like leavin' 'em a Sub' y'know?????) & oh yeah here's another thing...... I found out only last night that my fourteen year old son wrote down all the details of the Explorer II that I sold....... & kept the sheet of paper for best part of two years. When his Mum found it while tidying up one day & asked him what it was he told her...... .... "When I make it..... I'm gonna buy Dad his Rolex back". I mean Guys..... how ing cool is THAT huh?????

I don't think many watches can compare with a PO on a 'bang per buck' basis y'know? & Thankyou re; my son..... he has his moments (don't they all?!) but underneath it all he's gonna be a great guy.

I'm confused here, so did you get the LV or are you getting the PO?

The LV's being held for me to collect in February but the comparable quality & sheer value-for-money of the P.O.'s has got me kinda 'second-guessing' myself already.....

One sub is definitely NOT "worth" two POs...unless you just want the Sub, period, and that's what will scratch the itch. Value is in the eye of the beholder!

I own the PO and I agree, two PO's or the Sub LV. Gotta go with the PO's. Great story about your son.

Agreed. And for me it would be the LV. Your mileage may vary.

Great story about your son...
I don't know when you plan to pass them on to your sons, but it's you who is going to be wearing these watches for the next few yrs at least. If you get the LV and then next quarter the 16610....it's pretty much the same watch you'll be wearing. Imo I'd get the Lv and if you really like the PO get that too, then think about the 16610. You've plenty of time to enjoy them and make a final choice later...I'd be happy if my dad left me any watch. BTW the matte dial on the PO is awesome. |

I used to have an Exp11 & a DJ & The DJ just never got any wrist time 'cos it just felt too small. I currently own two Seamasters (one black, one blue, which I alternate six-monthly... kinda 'Summer watch' & 'Winter watch') & I like the 'familiar weight & feel' of wearing such similar watches. & the plan is that the boys either get 'em on their 21st or when I die..... All depends if I can afford another one for myself when they come of age I guess?!

my heart says get the subs now/asap 'cos it's been a 'father-son' goal-thing ever since I had my first Rolex.....
& once I've got 'em I'll maybe buy the PO's just to "scratch that itch" as our friend said earlier!!

Just make sure your AD actually holds that specific watch for you and doesn't tell you they will give you one then as with the supply chain dieing in the US who knows if they will still be in dealers or available new to dealers in a couple mths. Rolex may be out of the older cases as someone said and not worth making cases to get them through to the new model.

I cant blame you really. I have wanted a Submariner forever but the PO is a beautiful piece all on its own for sure.
Omega's are fine watches no matter how you look at them. |

When I was shopping for a Rolex, I thought I'd give the Omega brand a chance, so I stopped at a Omega AD to check out their line.
I wasn't impressed with any of the Omega's. Omega is under the SWATCH umbrella. The materials used in an Omega are the same as those being used in Swatch's. In essence, all you're doing is paying big dollars for a Swatch with the name "OMEGA" emblazoned on the dial. Rolex employs the use of 904L steel. Omega uses that cheapy tinny stuff that everyone else uses (314??). There's no comparison. By buying a Rolex, you're purchasing an over engineered watch. Comparing Omega and Rolex is like vegetables to steak. |

end brands like: Breguet, Blancpain, Glashütte Original, Jaquet Droz, Léon Hatot, Omega, Tiffany & Co.Omega make some very fine watches just like many others that can equal the build of Rolex any day.And some models from Seiko like the Seiko Grand movement wise and build quality will give most Swiss brands a run for there money at any price. And a lot of people think the Swatch group that owns ETA is a inferior movement to many in-house brands which it is not.In most of there movement there are 5 grades including a chronometer grade thats used by Rolex for the Tudor range. And watches like the Ulysse Nardin marine chronometers have always been highly regarded, but it is a little known fact that for years, they were fitted with a hi-beat version of (36000 BPH) version of the Swatch group ETA 2824-2, UN calibre NBC. Sometime I hear comments like "such an expensive watch and only an ETA movement inside ". Words like these give the impression that an ETA Swatch movement is of lower quality. It should be the other way around, people should say "Well, it has a excellent ETA movement inside this watch, but the price of this watch is astonishingly high".And lets not forget that the Swatch group still make and sell around five million plus movements a year.Lets not forget that ETA is the largest manufacture in Switzerland, because they too make everything, in-house only.I have a special regard for the Unitas 6497/8 this movement has not basically changed now for over 50 years, and is capable of COSC standards, and very forgiving in its servicing or lack of.A truly great workhouse movement that has powered many high end watches. This is short list of outstanding movements that should all easily achieve a daily consistency of five seconds or better on the wrist.ETA 2892-A2, ETA 2824/2, ETA 7750,Unitas6497/8,Omega 2500, JLC 889/2 , JLC 960, all of the current Rolex calibers, Longines 990 (Lemania 8815), PP 215, PP 240, Zenith 400,Zenith 670, GP 3100 plus there are many more.
