Rolex Movement 3186

Does anyone know if the 3186 movement that comes in the Explorer II has any extra value or makes the watch more collectable?
I know in the GMT II the 3186 is very rare and extremely collectable is it the same for the Explorer??

Good question.

Yes, the 3186 is a marked improvement over the 3185 movement and it's not just the Blue Parachrome spring.

There are a few other technical changes in the gearing, etc.

The 3185 movement has proven itself over the years as a very accurate and reliable watch and has survived expeditions through hell and high water; but the 3186 movement is a technological advancement over the older one and, yes, I would prefer to have the very latest technology in my watch.

The 3186 in the GMT is rare because the model was discontinued shortly after to make way for the GMTc. Since the Exp is still in production, I don't think it would add any value or make it collectible.

What year did they start with the 3186 ? Do you still set the date by advancing the gmt hand ?

The 3186 was introduced in the SOLID GOLD GMT-IIC when the watch was first brought out by Rolex in 2005.

You can set the date by merely unscrewing the crown, pulling it out to the first position and turning in the clockwise direction.......this moves the small hour hand around the dial.

When you pass midnight, the date will flick over.
