Rolex on EBAY
Has anyone ever sold a Rolex watch on EBAY?
Any suggestions or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated. Thx, Mike |

Hello Mike,
If you will be accepting Paypal make sure it's only in the USA and ship only to a confirmed address... Ship via USPS express mail and hold on to the receipt for about 90 days to make sure the deal is all good otherwise you can Good luck and go get them |

Thx 4 the response...
I was thinking of a bank wire payment. My wife is a Sr VP of a local bank, and she says they can now accept bank wires without account numbers. It is called a PUPID and it seems to be the safest way for both parties since there is an audit trail. PayPal would have an additional charge and may protect the buyer. I will have to think about it... Hate to have to raise the price. Mike |

Seems like you can avoid ebay completley then, no?
You could try selling on TRF. you will want references either place. On TRF you will likely have more educated buyers... |

always take down the SR# and take a photo of shipping PKG before sending it out and offer free over night service.
Take many photos as you can, your going to take a beating no matter what if the watch gets sold unless it does not meet the reserve. ebay will not list your item unless you take a paypal.... |

Most ppl like to pay with paypal confirmed, but the fees are a tad high IMO if you are the seller. Bank wire would be your best bet, I would give them a little discount if they use bank wire to encourage them to do so.
Personally, I am a big ebayer guy. Bought alot of stuff on Ebay and I wouldn't pay any other way than paypal confirmed. It's to my benefit as a buyer. If you expect someone to pay you with paypal confirmed, than I would pass the fees to them or set your reserved price a little higher to offset the ebay fees. Wish you luck! |

Ok information. Thx !!
Did not know about PayPal. I put both of them on TRF without any luck. I checked EBAY items sold and watches like mine are selling for even more than I am asking. Thanks for the info, I have sold many items on EBAY and have a 100% rating but not anything quite as expensive as a Rolex. Mike |

IMHO Paypal buyer fraud has to be the biggest threat to any seller of watches. Its rarely spoken about but believe me it has gotten allot of sellers.

Be careful of a scam where the "buyer" deposits a fake cashiers check / money order and claims that it was a bank wire. (A real bank wire, will show up as a "bank wire" in your account and nothing else.)
In this scam, once the seller sees the deposited funds (from the fake check), he/she ships the watch thinking that the funds are legitimate. A few days later, the banks returns the phony check as "NSF" and the watch is long gone. If you accept bank wire as payment, make sure that the funds are a legitimate bank wire. Quote:

When dealing with expensive items stay away from EBay all together with buying or selling high end watches. That is just my opinion though.

I would be very careful as a seller of high-end merchandise on ebay. Since the changes to the Paypal policy (I think back in December of 08) Paypal now offers absolutely no protection against claims made by buyers for items "significantly not as described."
Until this policy is changed, whether or not ebay makes it necessary for you to "offer" paypal as an option, I would insist on a bank wire transfer as the only payment option. Anything else is just rolling the dice, and hoping the buyer is honest--which I might add they often are not.

I never bought something on eBay, but tried it and finly abandoned.
Two ears ago I was looking for one 14060M no certif, and found one nice on eBay. The seller sent me one impressive list of his refernces, I sent mails and reference's answers was so perfect! But the seller asked the PayPal, absolutely and nothing else. I was a litle bit worry to send 3000 euros to an e-mail adress account. I prefered the bank wire. I asked to send me his bank reference and his copy of ID, and the photo of the Sub on a recent newspaper, the date of issue visible. He never did it, but insisted on PayPal payement without give me any detalis of him. Finaly, I gave out. I think wen you sell the watch, the first thing is to make clear for the potential buyer hou are honest and have nothing to hide. God luck |

I guess I forgot to add the worst part about the "item significantly not as described" scam. After the claim has been made, and paypal sides with the seller (which they will do) they will freeze your paypal account, sieze enough funds to cover the cost of the item. If you don't have enough money in the account they will do one of two things 1) withdraw the money from the bank account listed, or 2) if there isn't enough there file a collections claim.
As is that weren't bad enough, the buyer doesn't even have to return your item. All they have to do is show proof that they sent a package back to your address. To really add insult to injury, the only way to even attempt to get your money back is to try and sue the person who perpetrated the fraud...that is IF they are using their own identity! So to reiterate: You = out price of Rolex + possible credit hassles Criminal = one free Rolex + unlikely legal consequences If you don't want to take my word for it go check out the website called (I believe) paypalsucks.com

I would guess that the biggest thing working against you is potential buyers' doubts about authenticity. Make it clear that you are prepared to accommodate those doubts if they can be satisfied. If you make it clear that you understand that you have not earned potential buyers' trust yet, and that you're prepared to try to satisfy potential buyers in this regard, you may be likely to get higher offers.

Do not sell overseas! I live in Spain and I bought my Sub from a US seller and let me tell you, if I had been the seller I would have been $hititng my pants after the sale. First off, he sent the watch to me registered mail, that's all fine and good but you can not track it once it leaves the US. The watch arrived to me opened by customs and I didn't even have to sign for it! If I was a crooked buyer I could have kept the watch and filed a false claim and had a free Sub! There was nothing the seller could do. I also bought with a CC, so if PP didn't want to give me my $ I could have gotten it from the CC company anyway. Too much of a risk my friend, don't do it.
As I said before I will NEVER buy another watch from eBay nor will I ever sell anything of high value there either. |

Holy cow, I'm buying a safety box!!
Just for fun I advertised the watches on craigslist. Got several offers to buy using PayPal, one from a lady who gave me an address of a golf course that I traced on google. I knew about forged cashiers checks through my wife. She also said that bank cashiers check's can be cancelled sometime after you even deposit them. Thx Mike |
