Who has broken a GMT IIC bezel and how did you do it?
There has been some talk recently about Rolex "taking us for a ride" with the new ceramic bezels. I am only aware of one broken bezel since October and that one was not due to a "brittle" issue with the bezel, but with a "swinging set of keys" hitting it. If you have broken a ceramic bezel, let us know and describe in detail how you did it please. I am curious just how many broken bezels there are out there and exactly how they were broken.
......and if you have a ceramic bezel and have done things to it that you would have thought would have damaged it, but didn't, please explain that in detail too. Based on the responses, we should be able to determine if the ceramic bezels are "brittle" or are strong.

Why, whats the point at this very moment to start another thread about what is clearly been "burnt out" or has "ran its course" ??

Well, I'm ALL for a thread that aims to get some actual facts on this rather than just pie in the sky theories and accusations toward Rolex. More importantly, I like the idea of finding out instances where someone THOUGHT the bezel SHOULD have broken and it did not as well. The only way this might have been improved a bit is with a poll as well.

Because JJ's recent thread basically says that the ceramic bezels are "brittle" and maybe shouldn't have even been produced, but the overwhelming majority of ceramic owners, including myself, seem to show that the bezel is extremely tough and worthy. I personally have only heard of one case of a broken bezel in my 3 months of being on TRF and wanted to find out if there were a "lot" more cases that I didn't know about to support JJ's claim.
Basically, I want to get to the bottom of the issue and get some actual numbers and examples to either prove or disprove the "brittle" theory!

as Playdrv4me (what the hell kinda name is that?!) said I'm keen to learn of actual first hand experiences from owners (good and bad) rather than just 'opinions & speculation'. (incidentally I'd also like to hear of any problems with the bezel becoming detached rather than the insert becoming damaged, as well as any problems experienced with the clasp..... I recollect someone saying the 'joints' were weak or something??)

I am interested in this thread as well.
Who has had their bezel break???? I can tell you I hit mine hard on a metal door and it survived perfectly intact. I do not believe the 'brittle' theory. |

I'm not sure why you say it's a "burnt out" issue anyway. As far as I know, there is very little evidence to support JJ's claim, which he just made in a thread today.

We've yet to get a broken bezel story. Has everybody checked out my poll on the issue?

There was a guy on another forum a few months back that said he broke his bezel. He said it was like $1200 to replace it. That is the only one I know of.

Ok, there's 20 people that voted in my poll that the ceramic bezel is "brittle" because their bezels are damaged already, but there's not one person that's willing to tell us about how they damaged it? Hmm.........

That's because it is not brittle ! it is mighty strong, I have banged my new DSSD against the door knob while walking and swung my arm with the watch taking the hit right on the bezel and Nothing not even a scratch. It is solid! thats my opinion. Rolex has not taken anyone for a ride thats not their style

When I owned my GMT IIc I smashed it against the metal frame of a water polo goal, expecting to see it in peices I was very pleased to find there was not a mark on it.
I personally think they will stand up to a fair amount of punishment & you would have to be unlucky to break it. |

I have swung mine against brick walls and heard the grating noise. Not a scratch on the case crystal or bezel. Left a mark on the wall once, but nothing on the watch. The bracelet however does tend to pick up scratches.

I've had mine for over 9 months now and have also hit it hard a few times. (door handles, metal gates, etc.)
Each time, I too was scared to look, but it is absolutely fine. (And after polishing some minor scuffs from the clasp, it looks almost as good as the day I bought it!) Regarding the unfortunate accident with the bunch of keys, this was obviously a freak incident and I would bet that it would be very difficult to replicate the damage even using the same bunch of keys!

It might have been a fluke. I never had any problems in all my years with my rolex with steel bezel, I always thought the newer ceramic bezel is more harder and virtually indestructible.

Is this anything you can attest to first hand, OR is it a pic you pulled of the internet somewhere??

If it will break, I can break it. 3 months and nothing yet. My 16710 went through 4 or 5 over the last 8 years. Stay tuned for my "LNIBB ( Like Now I Broke my Bezel )" post.
