16660 vs. 16600 Sea Dweller Debate.
I have a cousin who is visiting. He is wearing his 16660 that he bought brand new in 1985 (app.). It is an 84XXXXX serial. From my limited Rolex knowledge and beginner research, I have concluded that the following features apply to this watch. It has the glossy dial, the <25 designation at 6. It has open 6's and 9's on the date wheel. It has the 18k gold surrounds. The watch has never been sent to Rolex, but it has been serviced at a local watchmaker.
He is debating either restoring, or selling as is to fund the purchase of a new M series SD. The watch looks pretty darn good for a 25 year old unrestored piece. Its a bit dirty, natch, and there are a few micro bubbles on the dial. The crystal has a scratch or 2 and a chip or 2 on the edges. No major dings or dents anywhere, in fact I have seen 2 year old Rolexes look a lot worse for wear! I am sure this debate has been waged numerous times on this forum, so I apologize for starting it up again. He wants to know what you, the members of this forum, advise. He has no clue about the value of the watch, either restored, or as is. I don't know if discussion about value is permitted on this forum, so please contact me directly if it is not. He is definitely committed to remaining a staunch Sea Dweller owner either way! Thanks. |
