Vintage Explorer
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/O-ROLEX-Oyste...ht_5324wt_1167
I haven't seen a 1002 model casing vintage Explorer before, especially with COSC. However it does have a 1570 movement. The caseback says II69 but the seller is putting the watch as having been made in the late 1980's to early 1990's It's pretty screwed up if you ask me, but what do I know. I thought the 5500 model was a non-cosc Explorer and that was the only one apart from the 1016.

I think there might have been an Air-King Explorer (Ref: 1002) in the 1960's but the auction of this watch seems to be very different to say the least .

The Rolex reference 1002 is a Rolex Oyster Perpetual (non-date) men's watch circa 1960's and not an Explorer as noted by the seller and the dial on the watch. Looks like someone placed an Explorer dial on this watch to enhance the value. The serial number is from the 1960's, not 1980's as noted by the seller. There are probably many other things wrong with the watch, but enough noted for it to be a big "watchout" and avoid for sure. Good find Steve.

Err buddies...the Seller did mention that the Dial has been refurnished...
But Orchi is thinking Dial is redone... There has been plenty of such Redone Dial Explorer in eBay... mostly bearing caseback ref 1002... These 1002 casebacks are normally associated with case model ref: 5500... which was mainly Air-King model... A real Ref 5500 Explorer should have caseback marked "5500"...inside. It's hard to tell from this listing what the watch has... as there is no picture of either the movement nor the inside caseback... Nevertheless...it should be treated as a Franken watch... NOT to be named as "Rolex Explorer" by the Seller... which in itself...would be grossly misinterpreted...n misrepresented. To the can...as buddy Springer would have said it...often. |

The watch is marked reference 1002, did I miss something Orchi. Err, if so, please advise. When he said it is a reference 1002, I assume he means how the watch is marked betwen the lugs, not caseback, which could be anything that fits. Please advise my friend as I am always learning. Maybe he meant the caseback is marked 1002, which is an Oyster Perpetual. Hell, I don't know what he meant!
