First Rolex
I don't yet have a Rolex, but intend to get one soon. What would you suggest as a good starter? Is there a good one for wearing to the office and on the weekend for play?

Any of the Stainless Steel models will work for you.. You need to decide what look and style you feel comfortable with..
There is no such thing as a "starter Rolex".....

Completely agree. Go to an AD who has a number of SS watches in stock and see what really works for you (and what you can afford). Good luck with your search and welcome to the forum - I'm new here also, and TRF has a wealth of information on these watches that you just won't find elsewhere. Plus, many very knowlegable watch enthusiasts!

Agreed - most versatile, most durable, affordable. And instantly flippable if you decide on another model later. Of course the Platinum Day Date is quite nice too...

John has it right. Get yourself the original classic sport watch. The stainless steel Submariner. You will not be disappointed!

As Larry rightly said, there's no such thing as a "starter Rolex"......so the best thing for you to do is amble over to your nearest AD and check out all the models. If you're still unsure, get the model no. of the one that catches your fancy and we'll try and help you with your final decision. Meanwhile, have yourself a blast on this great forum of ours. Good luck - JJ

I would suggest you go to your local Rolex AD and ask to try on a Submariner. A great first Rolex.

If you have a smaller wrist, you could try the Explorer.

Welcome! As the others suggested, a visit to your closest Authorized Dealer/Retailer would be helpul. There are plenty of sportier models to choose from that fit the bill for work and play...the Submariner, GMT II Ceramic, Explorers I and II, Milgauss, and Platinum Yacht Master, just to list a few.
Good luck to you... |

Do you want a sporty model or a dressy one ? Both i would imagine, then i would go for a white faced Explorer 2. very comfortable watch, not too expensive by Rolex standards. If you fancy a black faced watch go for a GMT or Sub. Go to your AD and try some on your wrist and one of them will smile back at you. Good luck.

I would suggest an Explorer II with a white dial. It is a nice combination between sport and dress. It will also hold its value well over time. I think it is a nice first Rolex or even tenth Rolex for that matter.

Even though I have a Sub I think I was engaging in a bit of wishful thinking with my suggestion because I am thinking of buying an Explorer II myself? By the way JJ, which do you think will hold better resale in the long run an Explorer II or Datejust II? I'm now selfishly thinking about my next purchase.

this is where i found it real easy, there was no choice to make whatsoever!
i wanted a submariner because it was a stunning attractive watch, ever since bond- live and let die, 6 years old i was, i wanted a submariner. the fact it was a Rolex only meant it was going to be harder for me to get given the exclusive price. all i wanted was a submariner, carried a huge interest for years about the model, wore many fake subs for many years (ashamed, but some who wear a fake do eventually buy a real one lol) etc etc.. 22years later i got my 1st sub, and some years even later i have flipped twice and have my 3rd. a lovely black TT. for this reason, i question the motives of one who decides to buy a Rolex, just because it's a Rolex, one who decides to buy a statement instead of a watch? one should choose a Rolex because it is the watch that you like the look/shape/design/function of. my advice, if you dont know instinctively the exact model you want in your head, best go to an AD and have a look around.. choose the one that catches your eye... hey, it may not even be a Rolex you buy.. just buy the watch you like most.. not the "name" on the dial. best of luck whatever you decide.. and welcome to trf! |

I would get a Steel Sub or a GMT 2...Can't go wrong with either one--but again--taste is personal so whatever you like the most-get!

Thanks, all, for the advice! I had been leaning towards a datejust. Many of you have sparked an interest in the sub. I'll have to go to an AD and test which one feels right!
And thank for the welcome, as well. |
