When will my watch become vintage?

My Rolex Datejust is 22 years old. Is it a vintage watch? To me it looks like new and I don´t look at it as vintage. I was just wandering when watches are categorized as vintage.

I'm not sure if there is an official definition of "vintage'' but my guess is the watch should be at least 30 years old.

There is no clear definition on this. Some forums place he dividing line at the point where sapphire replaced acrylic which is as good as any. (but by that definition no sapphire can ever be 'vintage')

I have decided that my 16613 will be 'vintage' when I can get this plate affixed to it legally as it will then be an "Antique Auto"...they don't offer any such plates for "Antique Hand Wound" though.

I think that most of the four numbered models i.e.(1675) ect. are vintage.

At the point you want to sell it for a higher price than you paid for it!

The true definition of vintage, is when Rolex refuses to service your watch!

If you take it to an RSC, and they say "Sorry, we no longer work on a watch of this vintage."

Everybody struggles with this definition.... I think that we would all agree that an old mid-80's Datejust would be a classic, and have a fine vintage like a good wine..

But in the collector world, it would not likely yet be a "vintage"......... and may not be considered so for another decade......

Good question, buddy............but I used to work in a museum and in that world, anything over 50 years was considered as "Vintage"............and more than that would be classified as "Antique".

Again, the word antique should not be confused with antique furniture and museum artefacts.

Just my 2 cents.

What about a discontinued model? Are they then called vintage?

If so would a v series sub, when they are replaced, be called a vintage?

With cars, they become classics (or used to) at 25 years old and vintage way older than that. Had to go to work in my car today as the work car is in the garage, got a comment "what a classic, not seen one of those in a while in that condition, I used to have one of those"

Its a 1991 Honda Prelude!!!! I have never ever ever considered it to be a classic, I only bought it because it was tidy and cheap, then kept it for ages, but after he said that I realised its nearly 20 years old!! Either I am getting older or classics are getting younger.

Back to the point, to me a 1990 watch doesnt really sound old, but then when you count the years its a classic...

What is a vintage watch ? " Vintage " is a term that comes from the anglo-saxon wine trade , mainly used in the Port ( Portugal ) wine trade and designates a high quality harvest year and will have had a minimum of 10 years of maturation .
The french vendange ( cutting the grapes of the stems ) became "vintage" with the english speaking traders.
