Vintage diving with 5513 Sub

Hola Amigos!! Hello fellows!
I wished to share these pictures, taken while trying an old Scuba rig last week end.

No good pictures of my Sub U/W, but hope diving fans at TRF will enjoy seeing a 1960´s double tank, and double hose regulator in action, same style used by Mike Nelson at Sea Hunt TV series (starring that great guy, Lloyd Bridges as M.N.!)
No BCD and webbing straps are what we used on those far days.

Me at left with double rig, and my son as safety diver at right, keeping an eye that my old double hose workhorse keeps giving air as in old times.

Just a shining hint of the Sub plexi in this picture.

And here is a top side view of my Sub 5513 (1970´s vintage).

Hi 1369!! Yes! that´s an old US Divers Mistral, single stage, double hose reg just completely overhauled, attached to a double 38 cu ft tank rig. (actually Sportsways, though it came with US Divers decals.
Lloyd Bridges used Voit equipment, but the look is exactly the same!

Jim C: Thanks, I was a kid too, and Mike Nelson made me bit the bug of scuba diving. I´m 61 now, and make a dive from time to time.

A Rolex Sub has been with me since 1966, first a 5513 which was stolen, then a 1618 bought by my wife in 1977 to replace my stolen 5513, which I still keep. Then came others, including SD and SDDS which I keep too.

I feel that the Sub and Sub date are the perfect divers watch. Compact and super rugged. Yes, I´m a fan!

great stuff, I have a buddy who dives with that stuff, he made up a nice block for the regulator so he can have a LP and HP hoses connected (required for some vacation destinations) let me know if you want his contact info.

Thanks for your comment. I appreciate your offering.
I have been browsing some USA web sites related with vintage equipment diving and offering some kind of adaptors to use old double hose regs with BCD´s and pressure gauge.
I really appreciate the better safety and comfort of these two accesories, as well as an octopus second stage, and these modern equipment is what I usually use in scuba diving.

Anyway, on that ocassion I wished to use this old equipment similar to the ones I learned to dive with, some 40 plus years ago, and show my son what his dad used when very young.
I feel modern equipment is far easier to breath and much more comfortable and safer than these old rigs. It´s specially wonderful to have the benefit of a BCD for bouyancy control, as you well know as per your nickname and avatar.

I enjoyed very much the experience of trying this old rig after so many years, and it was thrilling and fun, and hope to use it from time to time at shalow depths and controlled conditions only, though I´m well aware that some fellow divers in USA are using this type as their principal rigs just for the thrill and fun of it.

It would be interesting to know about the adaptor your friend uses in his own regulator, if you can find a picture or link.

You are welcome Abel, and............keep posting picts of that kind. I trust that all members enjoy them, especially some that dive for their living.

I still do a few dives during summer, but without equipment, nor suit, just for the fun and catching some fish. I also train my boys, 11 and 13, to love and respect sea and the environment.

It´s so good to know about you.
My son is 31 and daughter 28 now, both certified divers too. I enjoyed very much sharing the passion for the sea when they were just childs, and later accompanying them through the scuba diving learning process and certification.
They are my best diving buddies, and enjoyed many wonderful dives with them.
I dive from time to time now, and it´s more difficult now to dive with my children, as they formed their own families.
Hope my grand children will enjoy scuba diving in the future, and that they will became accomplished divers, and respectful of the sea.
Though I see very difficult to be able to accompany them underwater in ten or fifteen years from now!
I´m glad to know you enjoy free diving and learn about your childs. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with us.

This great stuff Abel. Thanks for sharing. My pop’s taught my brother how to dive but he never took to it. Unfortunately I never got the chance. Every time I find or see some old dive stuff it is amazing how much I remember from being a little kid.
