16710 rectangular II dials

I'm currently in the process of seeking a 16710 M series but I want to learn as much as possible before making any moves. I love the design of these GMTs especially the pepsi dials, but I also want these to retain value. I know these all have the 3186 movement and that is certainly the one I want. I was just curious, I know there are several types of dials. One is the normal II, the other is the stick dials, and lastly they also have the rectangular II dials. Which of these are most valuable from a collector standpoint. I've heard the stick dials are rare, but what about the rectangular II dials??

I'd say that none of them have any collectors added value (yet). The "stick dial" has nothing with the 3186 to do. All three versions of the dail have been around for many years, but when it proved that the GMT 16710 came with caliber 3186, some people tried to find external proof of that, and some thought it was the "stick dial" (which it was not).

Still, this has been used as an argument to ask for a higher price, without any good reason.

The 16710 with the 3186 might be a collectors item in twenty or thirty years, but it could also be like the Explorer 1016, which were sold with caliber 1560 early on, and later with 1570. There is no premium on those watches based on the different calibers. The sell on dial (gilt or not), and mostly the condition of the watch, plus if it is full set and all original.

Look for a 16710 (with a 3186 if you prefer that) at a good price for daily use. If you want to buy a collectors GMT, get yourself a 16750 with matte dial and full set. Those are still serviced (caliber 3075), and has a lot of the older style charm with their plastic crystal and matte dial.

Best,

A

Spot on. Those dials and 3186 movements mean nothing. Maybe they will in a few decades but no reason to pay more now for a future "maybe".

I'd like to see a shift in how the spike in value is being described on this forum. I think calling it "collector" or "collectability" value is improper. I think it's more appropriately styled speculator value.

I haven't seen our vintage experts on this forum chiming in on the desirability or future collectability of an M-serial 16710.
