Does anyone know?

I am in the process of purchasing my first Rolex, and I am wondering what the normal proceedure is in reguards to negotiating. I have visited 2 local dealers to try and decide on the model I want and neither mentioned discounting the watch (when I bought my Breitling I was given 20% discount just for walking in). Any help in this area would be great. I live in the CT/ Western MA area if that helps.

Just...ask for it. It's parallel to general car shopping.

Just be polite and respectful. It's a negotiation like any other.

True. However, negotiation is a skill like anything else.
a. There are some AD who will not budge so...
b. mention to him that you know that discounts can be had at other dealers , at grey market and here.
c. if he does not respond then shop around Look here for some good deals. from respected members. But always remember to buy the seller not the price. Your good deal may not be so good if an AD renigs on his offers, fails to service it with Rolex ( uses his watchmaker instead ). The same is true with any other seller.

Don't be penny wise and pound foolish.

thank you all for your insights and most of all helping a newbie. What would be a good discount %? Also you mentioned that some members sell them. If you could explain how that works that would be great.

Not all ADs will negotiate. I went into a shop in Santa Barbara, CA, and spent some time looking at the Submariner 16610. When we got to the price dance, I asked, and she said they do not dicker on price.

Perhaps it was because I had no relationship with them, or that the 16610 sells pretty well without discount, or perhaps this AD truly does not discount.

You may have better luck. As for me, I bought used. I purchased a very nice watch that looked new, but without the new price.

I would suggest trying our Forum's classifieds. There are some very trustworthy sellers who are selling at prices ADs cannot match. No haggling needed!
