Value of Datejust with Diamond Dial
I've recently purchased a midsize stainless datejust with diamond dial. I've been told that all the parts are authentic Rolex, except the dial. Diamonds were added aftermarket.
I've read enough here to know how people feel about adding/changing anything on an original Rolex. My question is how does adding diamonds effect the watch value? What is the value difference if diamonds were added to a real Rolex dial vs a totally new aftermarket dial? How can I tell the difference? I didn't necessarily want a diamond dial, but it looks good. I'm trying to determine the value of the watch with the changes to the dial. What would a 1980/81 stainless midsize datejust with oyster band (mint condition) be worth? With diamond dial? With originial dial? Thanks so much for the input. |

Adding aftermarket diamnd will cheapen the watch. Not sure exactly how much it effects the value. Value is differently preceived by different people. If you try to sell the same watch on ebay, maybe a lot of people will want it... thus get you a higher return, who knows....
1980 Midsize datejust is worth around 1800-2300. Depend on the condition. |

First off, welcome to TRF! You'll be amazed at the amount of knowledge available here. Diamonds obviously add to the cost. How much depends on where the diamonds are added but a diamond dial for a DJ will run between 1500 & 2000 from an AD.
Having an after-market diamond dial will affect the watch primarily if you ever want to get it serviced at an AD. They won't do it. Also, I haven't seen any aftermarket diamonds that approach Rolex quality for brilliance and match. But, they are considerably less! |

Definitely a lot of good info here.
Does Rolex make a diamond dial for this watch? Can you add diamonds to a real Rolex dial? If so, how can I tell the difference b/w a Rolex dial with diamonds and an aftermarket diamond dial? Am I right in saying there could be 3 options: a diamond Rolex dial, diamonds added to a Rolex dial and an aftermarket diamond dial? How would you know the difference? |

Rolex make an original diamond dial for the dj. You would be better off sending it for service and dial change to it's original dial. If it's serial reveals a diamond dial then the watches value and authenticity will be complete. Otherwise you can ask the service centre to put whatever type of diamond dial suited for your model at a price.
