the air king dial
i understand that the air king was a tribute to war-time pilots, but why the sub-second marks? i've yet to find an explanation for these. and, by the way, i think those ticks help make the air king's dial really cool and unique.

I don't understand the question...
Do you mean the extra half second mark on some of the dial types...

yes... sub-seconds... half seconds... same difference! excuse my wording, as it is my raid on inarticulate with shabby equipment... as ts eliot put it.
i guess the newer air king dials do not have those half-second marks - i've never bothered to look closely at them. but on most older air kings, i have noticed them. |

It all has to do with accuracy. The Air-King is the most accurate watch Rolex makes!
Another proud owner of a Rolex Air-King. |

I think that it is just a classsic dial variation.. Some of the early DJ's also sported the half second ticks as well as some DD's.
Of course, some Chronographs have 4 ticks between each second mark effectively dividing into 1/5 seconds......... Now, that's real handy....:)

wow, i had not noticed the half-second ticks on any of the early datejusts... i'll have to look more closely. so it appears to be aimlessly cosmetic? also, it may have allowed rolex to boast of their smooth sweeping seconds hand, and what it is able to measure...
