The Rolex Phenomenon
At first glance, Rolex’s reputation seems ill deserved. It is not a centuries old house, it doesn’t have the chiq of Patek Philippe, the history of Brequet or the finesse of Jaeger LeCoultre. To be honest, there’s little refinement to be found in those watches. And to make things worse, ‘real’ watch buffs frown upon the by some perceived status as überbling.
Why is it then, that we like them so much? To me it is a number of factors. Everyone and his third distant cousin knows Rolex, so it’s no use denying the fact that the watch is recognizable. In fact, it has become an icon. Then a number of arguments that aren’t specific to Rolex but more generic. Waterproof. Only becomes special with the venerable Sea Dweller. There still aren’t many watches who can go a depth of over 0.62 mile and keep ticking. (But I feel sorry for the poor guy attached to that watch). Robust. Ask any Citizen Pro Master Dive watch owner about robustness. Accurate. Well, there are hundreds of watch brands who sport watches just a accurate as Rolex’s. It must be something else besides the iconic status then. The extremely conservative attitude of the brand perhaps. The improvements and changes take place in an evolutionary ‘pace’. An oak tree grows faster. (I get visions of an all digital Rolex now, the LEDlex Mk. One, brrrrrrrr). This is what kept the brand in the saddle. They didn’t put all their money on quartz during the Japanese digital ‘invasion’. No, they took part in the development of the first Swiss analog quartz movement (to be beaten by Seiko) and quietly introduced the Oyster Quartz. But mechanical watches are still their most important offering. But that offering is not a dazzling array of different models. No, the models they offer are mostly variations on the same theme. When you are prepared to spend that much cash on a watch, the above factors don’t play a roll anymore. Any $200 watch can fit the bill. To me it is clear that more subjective, nee, emotional aspects come to play in the purchase and ownership of a Rolex. Ever seen an Explorer 1 on a black, woven strap? Absolutely stunning! The pictures some of you guys submitted over the past few days made my mouth water. Boy do I love the Sub and SD. There’re not mere watches but fine pieces of machinery. I don’t get that feeling when I see a Breitling. Neither hot or cold. Fine watches, no doubt, but I prefer a ‘lex. Thanks, Frans.

I must warn you my friend. I don't know how to bring this to you without causing shock but your watch is a FAKE! There should be Rolex, Swiss Made engraved on the back. I do hope that you didn't pay retail for that watch. Take care, Frans. P.S. I'll take that fake off your hands for, say, $100. But act fast!

And to think that less than 48 hours ago, Frans was worried about going off-topic - he's natural born TRF material!

Yes James both Seiko and Citizen have produced some great divers,
the 6306 is now becoming quite rare, only a short production time.Think they finished around 1981 it has a 21 jewel movement, then came the 6309 with 17jewel movement.
