Just got off the phone with RSC (Dallas, Texas) and the price for service for a SS model startes at $600.00!! Platty service starts at $700 or $800, I forgot because I was still blown away at the SS price!

The price keeps on going up and up!

4 to 6 week turn around.

The more prices go up on a service, the less likely folks will be to stick to a conservative service schedule and will spread out the years....

It's not like the watch will suddenly stop working at 5 years...

I think that service prices can get so high that they start losing money for lack of work................

This vintage Roelx Cellini (1967) in my signature sat in a lawyer's safe for about 15 years and when it was removed, I wound it, it worked fine and kept good time.

Yes, I personally will probably be waiting longer than the 5 to 7 year suggested service interval.

I will also be looking for a good and reliable independent watchmaker too.

I am just about to send two of my watches to the Dallas Service Center so I'm not happy about the recent price bump however it's only 10% so I guess it could be worse. I still think the official RSC's are the best deal overall considering all they do including the peace of mind of knowing they will use only genuine parts and do top notch refinishing and offer a full two year warranty, etc.

I wonder if the platinum service prices are higher due to difficulty in refinishing a platinum case and bracelet or another reason?

I know what you mean about the peace of mind, but it sure is getting expensive!

Here are the mailing directions if you plan on sending your watches in yourself. Other option is going through your AD. (however, I'm sure you know that already)

I'm not suprised, and don't think anyone should really be, we are in the Rolex world after all. I had a SS Seiko over-hauled and it cost me $120. I think that was the original price of the watch. A SS Rolex overhaul is 5 times that much, but the original cost is FAR higher then 5 times the overhaul. Move up the price of the watch, and the service cost moves up with it. As for lenght of interval between services, you guys are probably right, this will lead to longer and longer times.

I am surprised it's not more......Anyone know exactly what the $600. service at the RSC Dallas or NYC comprises today? Do they install a new crystal???
It's been a while since I had my Rolexes serviced by corporate RSC.
Rolex closed their Los Angeles service ctr. last year(2009)....I didn't want to ship my watch to Dallas.....a watch buddy introduced me to a local AD....3 watchmakers on staff.....they did a service in 2009 on my 1963 18K YG Datejust, didn't need a crystal....just a gasket & oil, as far as parts.........$350.
So $600. from RSC isn't too bad, yes it's expensive but Rolexes run forever....I bought 2 new and after 10 years they were a little slow...took them to RSC in L.A., it was an indie back then, Walter Gooden....they serviced it, never said that I should have brought in sooner, no problem, minimal service cost.....the watch went for another 12 or so yrs., slow, took it to the indie RSC on Post St. in San Francisco....same thing, they serviced it, no problem, minimal cost. Rolexes are pretty hardy......I bought my Expl. 2 brand new in 1973........it's had 3 services and 1 renovation....that & the last service were done in 2005....not too bad for a luxury item...when you compare it to other lux things...Rolexes are cheap to keep.

Larry, what's your opinion of the conservative service schedule? From this post, it sounds like you think it's okay to go longer.

I don't see any reason for having a higher servicing cost in a precious metal watch other than the added complexity of the day date mechanism on the movement. Refinishing is the same and it's even optional.

True. It is my understanding that only a RCS can get original Rolex parts. Therefore, my watch will never see an independent watchmaker, no matter what the cost at a RSC.

I recently paid $645 for a service in LA at a local well respected watch store on Pico Blvd. (not supposed to post names here, right?) The service for my 8,xxx,xxx Datejust included all the standard service tasks as well as a new crystal and some minor parts.

I was told that if the shop has set up a Rolex account they can get Rolex parts.
