Engraving Gift Rolex/ Sex & The City 2

So, I just watched the new "Sex & The City 2" trailer, and it is revealed that Carrie (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) gives Mr.Big (actor Chris Noth) an SS DJ, and has engraved on the back "Me and You. Just - Us Two." as an anniversary gift.

During the popular HBO series of the same name, Mr.Big wore several Rolexes, including a TT DJ, and a YG Day-date

I know Carrie's character is way over the top romantic and all, but this is crossing my line. I think it's bordering on sacrilegious...

What do you all think: Yea or nay on this romantic gesture?

Would/have any of you engraved a Rolex that you were surprising someone with as a gift?

P.S. The fact that the crown is unscrewed in the screen shot bothers me, lol.

Meh - maybe I'm not hard-core enough but a caseback can always be replaced. The loose bracelet is a bit more of a big deal to me...

my 1680 which i gifted to my son for his 18th (presently in for service) i had it engraved , but the engraving is,nt very deep and possibly could be buffed out? but the reason for engraving was to make it personal, so it wouldnt be swapped for a playstation when my back was turned, as i had it nigh on 30 years, its not something i would expect him to sell, considering i bought it secondhand for £160 (its cost more in servicing,(4 now) as a former royal marine it had a hard life at times and got knocked about) will post pics when it returns, quoted 12 weeks but in my experience normaly 10weeks? ( i,m paying for the service, although it belongs to him i look upon the watch as part of the family!!)

Silly text to engrave, but besides that, I don't see the problem. I think it is a great way to make a fairly "safe" gift much more personal.

If I need it engraved on the back so I can remember the occasion and who gave it to me, it had better be a day-date as well.

Receiving my Rolex from my hubby is forever engraved in my memory all on it's own quite nicely.

myabe there's more to this story, could be a subplot...that watch looks like a vintage model...

You'd think that She would get Mr. Big something a bit more at his level...

As far as the engraving goes...I'm not for it, but If my wife gave me an engraved Rolex for a special occasion, It wouldn't devalue the watch for me at all....the opposite in fact..

However if I'm looking at the pre-owned market and there's an engraving, I would never purchase..

I got my Dad a SS DJ for his 70th and engraved it with his name and the date. He liked it.

I am looking to do the exact same of sorts for when my dad retires. He's a neurologist and has had and does have many long hours to support our family and give me a great education. Although he is the man never to have a car over $50k and is happier wearing a timex, his father (rip) and myself collect/ed watches so he knows it's coming. He mentioned when In an Ad when I got my PAM 112 that he would like a watch like one of these one day. (not a Panerai per say, just a nice watch). Currently he has a simple "gold" seiko on leather with roman numerals that he loves. Therefore I think he would love a Patek Calatrava 5120j of sorts with his name or something on it :) he's got a couple more years but well see!!!!!

To my knowledge, few try to sell in the pre owned market with the engraving on so they don't have to spend anything. But others will buff it off or get a new back to increase value.

I have a SS DJ that was my father's. I'm currently expecting my first son. I have been considering engraving my fathers initials, my initials and then my son's initials on the caseback, since he will be recieving the watch one day. Does this seem gaudy? Should I just leave it as is?

Wow, that shot makes me shudder...

It's clearly an older watch, so what if it's -NOT- a new purchase (a vintage gift)?

What if Carrie takes it out of his winder and runs down to the local shop and has them inflict that cornball sentiment on his watch, "Overhaulin' style" ?

Maybe that kicks off the trouble/drama in the sequel!

Oh, and are those spot-welds attaching the end links to the case???????

Aren't watches traditionally a first anniversary gift? Not too sure about the engraving, I had the option to engrave one for my wife and took a pass. Also unless that dj belonged to frank Sinatra or something, I'd be salty. Bit my wife knows I like divers.

With that inscription, it seems to me that she's commemorating a decision/circumstance that means they'll not have children???

Well, SJP is approaching 60 years old, so I would think that ship has sailed for her character.

Isn't this an older model DJ? Old bracelet?

Normally I'd say they unscrewed the crown to stop the watch - you don't want the time shown on the watch shifting around when you edit the scene. But, if its vintage, there is no hack so ... ...

I know right? Although it's true Mr. Big has always worn the line of professional watches, I think that if she was going to go vintage, she should've gotten him a vintage sports model like a cool no date sub, or an older Daytona...or maybe even just something brand new from the sports line.

Lol, Carrie is getting older... And yes the consensus seems to be that this is a vintage model.

Yes! IMHO, if you're going to engrave-- do it on the caseback and get a replacement.

Really sharp point there. Yeah, continuity is a big deal in movies. I catch a lot of the mistakes and it can be distracting. That is probably why they did it.

If my girlfriend gave me a Rolex I would be delighted, engraved or not but there isn't much chance of that so with an objective head on I agree Lauren, engraving a vintage just doesnt seem right ..... unless of course she bought it with the engraving already done by a previous owner ... now there's a thought

Nothing wrong with engraving, as mentioned above, the caseback can always be replaced, BUT: the font and style in the watch engraved on the show is heinous IMO. Beautiful engraving good, pedestrian engraving bad.

At least those are my thoughts...

I dont see anything wrong with engraving it, providing its in the right context.I'd be doing backflips if my wife gave me one, especially personalized. It just shows a lot of thought.
