Movie: Leaving Las Vegas, Nick Cage

I was watching my DVD copy of the movie "Leaving Las Vegas" last night starring Nicolas Cage and Elizabeth Shue.

In the past, I was totally oblivious to the scene where he walk's into a pawn-shop in Las Vegas to sell his watch to raise cash to buy more booze. Anyway, here's how the scene plays out;

Nick Cage walks into Pawn-broker's shop;

Pawn-broker: "Can I help you?"

Nick Cage: "I'd like to sell you this watch!" (hands watch to pawn-broker).

Pawn-broker: "I'll give you $500 for it".

Nick Cage looks to his right and speaks to Yuri, (Shue's pimp), and says

Nick Cage: "$500 for a 1993 Rolex Daytona................(smiles)..............I'll take it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Those %*&#@! never lose money. It would have popped up in the case with a $4500 price tag... Or whatever the 1995 price was for a second hand Daytona.

Last night, on Studio 60, a NBS TV executive stops to look at his watch. There's a great shot of a white dial Rolex Daytona. In HiDef the thing looked huge and very detailed.

Because he knew it was a fake.

Here's a tidbit of info: The Rolex that Ben (Nicolas Cage) wears in the film is John O'Brian's (the author) actual watch.

Yeah, they are in the clothing store, I believe, and he had just finished paying with a $100 bill. They find out another clue to the puzzle, and he asks to see the back of the bill. When the clerk says no, he says "here, I'll give you my watch, it's a Submariner, quite valuable actually."

One of my favorite movies, and one of my favorite watches.

I am watching Leaving Las Vegas now and he just went to the pawn shop. To be honest, I’ve had a crush on Elisabeth Shue since the 80’s. Great movie
