I like it. It has a nice new movement and the case size and colours are perfectly blended. Unfortunately, I can't afford it.

Doesn't quite hit the spot for me, but a great movement and a ton of wrist presence. WG is the pick of the models imho

Cheers

Nicknamed ClownMaster, doesn't hold its value very well; on the other hand, I think it's a misunderstood watch. It has a unique movement and unique feature.

Someone here was commenting that the Yacht crowd much prefers subs and others and there are very few of these in the Yacht crowd.

I say if you like it, be bold and go for it!

Love it, but at over £20k I'd rather pick up four £5k watches..

At this level, I would be looking very hard at the WG Sub (or a WG Daytona if I wanted a chrono)

Cheers

I used to race out of San Francisco in my younger days, and most guys were using digital watches that had countdown timers, stopwatches and multiple time zones, etc. Granted that was before the advent of the YM2 but those guys wanted more features than just a 10 minute countdown timer.

That said, I agree on the misunderstood part. I think that watch is the bomb-diggity and would snap one up if it were in my price range. Love the yellow gold version, personally. But they could take the Yacht Master off the bezel and not break my heart!

Never sure where to look to tell the time on this model but if it floats your boats go for it.

I am really not crazy about this one. And for the money, I would prefer to have 4 other watches instead of just the one.

The Rolex Yachtmaster II Regatta... a sailors opinion...

I have been competitively racing sailboats most of my life and raced all over the country. I belong to several yacht clubs. I have attended several "Americas Cup Hall of Fame" dinners where Rolex is the main sponsor with the president of Rolex USA is in attendance, donating a watch (14060) for a fund racing raffle each time. I will be attending the dinner again this year and would be surprised to see an YM II raffled off or donated to this years inductees. Rolex, one of the MAJOR sponsors of racing events world wide has traditionally donated Submariners to the yachting community as trophys. That may change with the YM II.

I have only seen TWO Rolex yacht masters worn by anyone on a sailboat race. The Rolex that is prevalent the Submariner by a large margin. The second most common Rolex would have to be the Datejust TT followed by the less common GMT. These watches are NOT being used to time the start of the boat in the race. Until the countdown feature was added the Rolex Yachtmaster was useless on a racing sailboat for use by the helmsman or tactician to get the boat to the line at the start of the race. I have not seen a new YM II up close to examine the countdown feature, however, the Timex Iron man and cheap digital watches like it tend to dominate the wrists of helmsmen, tacticians and bowmen... the only people on a boat who even need to now the "time to the start". Sailboat races are sometimes hours/days long and measured to the hundredth of a second. It is fair to say that once off the boat a variety of other watches are worn and again, with sailors IIMHO Submariners and datejusts are most popular around the yachtclub bar after a race. I personally take my watch off when I am racing/crewing on a big boat as there are too many things for it to catch on to hurt myself or damage the watch. After the race my Rolex or Omega comes out of the chart table drawer where it spent the race with my wallet and cell phone.

I guess if you have a big power boat and want some "bling" as a prior post mentioned, the yachtmaster is it. Most of the heavy hitters in the sailing world are not the kind of guys who feel the need to be, or want to be seen with bling on their wrists. The understated elegance of the Submariner or the GMT seems to suit the sailing crowd just fine.

If I do "sight" a YM II on anyone's wrist around a sailboat regatta, I will report back here...however I would not be holding my breath.

PS. Daytona's and day/dates seem to be what I have seen most often on the wrists of the motoryacht crowd.

There's nothing wrong with it as long as you like it.........I would however consider getting a Daytona plus a WG Sub.
