Someone called my Speedy Pro a "Poor man's Daytona" earlier today!
I am a bit disgusted as I type this. I was at the gym this morning. Checking out and drinking my post workout shake at the counter.
Guy next to me, he keeps staring at my wrist. Finally he asked me, "Is that a Speedmaster?" I was pleasantly surprised and replied "yes it is, its a 1969 vintage in fact." He then said "Its a nice watch, but its not a Rolex, its a poor man's Daytona really." I was a bit taken back by that statement. I then replied "that is your opinion and you are certainly entitled to it, however the Omega Speedmaster is not a poor man's anything in MY opinion." I wished him well and left. I believe its people like HIM that make others hate Rolex owners or view us as a bunch of pompous watch snobs. What is wrong with people? I have complimented people on their Invicta watches that I genuinely liked, price has nothing to do with it. I was apparently snubbed for having only an Omega. Its unreal. |

Well, you could have told him, 'Today, the Daytona is a higher-priced watch than
the Speedy, but when they tested watches to go to the moon in '68, the Rolex didn't cut it. And I have at least half a dozen Rolexes, including three Daytonas. How many do you have? Only the one? Well, then you must be the poor man, as well as being an ignoramus.'

wow, that guy is a real idiot... i love the speedy...cant wait to get my hands on a legend or a broad arrow "racing," my current favorite speedy is the solar impulse...shake it off....one of the few things that i've learned is that its a waste of time trying to teach people without brains how to think or what to think, u can only change and influence what u think...be glad u know better...

don't sweat that guy. he's an idiot. even though i don't own a Speedmaster, i know that it is a terrific, timeless, iconic watch.
i just don't get some people. what is the point in going out of your way to insult a stranger's watch (or anything for that matter)? who does that? |

The Speedmaster is in a class of it's own, with it's own legacy. Just because the subdials are positioned the same way in a Daytona perhaps makes it a target for comparison.

Thank guys. I think I handled it rather well. I gave a slight verbal jab back, though I doubt he caught it.
I didnt notice if he even had a watch on to be honest. I could have said a lot to him, but why bother? |

What a moron! I love Omega and plan to purchase a Planet Ocean or better yet the Earth, Moon, Mars... Definately not a "poor man's" anything IMO. Wear it with pride! I would!

I would have called him an ignorant f***** **** to his face.
Then I would educate him. This might have won him over.

The Speedmaster is the only watch officially chosen to go to the moon. It comes in many variants and even has an actual date window if you want one. It is different from a Daytona in some ways, but not inferior in any way IMO. Most people have no clue and only see the "brands."

You definitely did the right thing of walking away as the guy was a complete waste of time. Wouldn't give him a moment of my attention.
The beloved Speedy timed the manually accomplished rocket burn for Apollo 13’s atmosphere re-entry when the computers were out. One of the most horologically significant watches out there, plus its just darn cool As a collector, I do have problems with not only the less educated (on watches) Rolex owners, but the perception of the brand by the general public......oh, well. PS: Miss my Speedy.

Agreed, the guy is an idiot, the speedmaster is an exceptional watch, calling it the "poor mans Daytona" proves he's an exceptional moron.

I know exactly how I would've handled this.
I would've slowly looked him up n' down from head to toe n' back to his face & simply said: "You Prick". (But only 'cos I'm trynna cut back on my swearing!!)

I am going a little against the conventional wisdom here but... I will say this. When asked about my watch "is it a Rolex", I just say yes and move on. If I feel that the situation may be a stranger trying to size me up to rob me, and they say "is that a Rolex", I either ignore them or just say "no" or "what?" like three times...this usually frustrates them and they move on. Not that your move warranted an uneducated comment but you could have just said "yes" and not given the details about the "1969 vintage". My opinion and kick me if you must but unless it's a friend or someone you have established a relationship as a WIS, no need to give details. It can lead to them feeling dumb at best, and a robber knowing they have a "rare" watch at worst. And I know...nobody on here is afraid of anyone, we all will kick some a** if anyone takes our Rolex (or Omega), they better be prepared to meet my friend S&W etc...but why put yourself in that position. I am just saying, in my experience, nothing good comes from a stranger asking me about my "high ticket" items, and me giving more information than needed. -Pete
