Question regarding axle...

I guess this is directed towards the technical experts on the forum...pardon the question/query but I'm curious as to what the function of an axle in the movement is and what happens when it is broken. Any help would be much appreciated.

There is a lot of different axles in a movement, so it depends what one you mean.

The usual suspect when I hear axel is the rotor axel - the big pin that the winding rotor spins upon...they wear and sometimes break. If worn you hear clanking noises like tiny gnomes hitting every part of your watch with malicious tiny hammers.

They cost about $25 and are an easy replace.

Thanks! There are noises but aren't the clanking type...they're more of a ratchety sound which becomes especially prominent when I shake the watch...it sounds more like something is loose and turning around inside...though again I can't be sure. I do appreciate your suggestion though.

That's a worn rotor axel...sound 'grindy" like something it rubbing against the back of the case? winds and sets fine, but if you shake it you hear metal on metal?

Hack the watch and call a service guy...every time the rotor hits the case back you risk getting tiny metal shavings into the works. Not bad now, but could get really expensive really fast.

Exactly, it sounds like metal on metal...if it is indeed the rotor axle, would it be expensive to replace? Should I only have it done at an authorized service center, or could it be something a competent service guy could do?

I really really appreciate your help.

When the axle goes bad IE metal on metal it will leave metal filings dust all over the movement which must be removed. So a routine cleaning is in order and check all other parts for damage and wear. Rik
