Icon5 Is my 8.25" wrist too big for a 36mm Datejust?

I have long admired the classic SS Datejust, but have always felt that my wrist was too big for the face. My wrist measures 8.25" and I prefer watches in the 40-42mm range because anything else feels too dainty. I have been waiting for them to release the SS DJII w/ silver face and roman numerals, but I continue waiting... Also, I've read the comments of a lot of members bashing the DJII as being out of proportion.

All that being said, is a 36mm Datejust just too small for an 8.25" wrist? Does anyone with similar measurements have any pics of the watch on their wrist?

Thanks!

I have a 6,5 wrist. And I think a 36mm fit's my wrist, but any smaller watch, will feel like a lady's watch on me.

So I'm sure that it will be way to small for you. But I think you should try on at a AD if you really like the watch

Since you asked, the answer is: Yes, the 36 mm DJ would look like a tiny m&m on that massive wrist!!

I have a 7½" wrist and my AD still finds the small DJ looking "funny" on my wrist.

On your sledge-hammer wrist, you'd have to go looking for the watch!!

I have an almost 8" wrist.

I had a DJ but never wore it because it felt small after wearing my daily Explorer II.

IMO.....
You should go with a bigger watch & ignore what others say about the DJII.

It's a beautiful watch.

Gotta agree with Padi here. Wear the watch you like. if it sings to you, wear it.

Besides, with wrists that size, I doubt anyone will have anything to say to you.

I agree with padi on this. I've a 34mm date and 39mm Exp II. I'm 6' 2" and 18 stones. Both look equally at home on my 8 1/2" wrist.

IMO, the 36mm will look fine on you, my dad has big wrists and wears one and it looks great on him ... he got it years ago when we all wore smaller watches ,,,, just think the small hamilton watches they did in vietnam ,,, big watches are just in fashion and all go bigger now ,,, see the new Explorer I ... pumped up to 39mm ,,, why? it was great the way it was ,,,

Bigger is not always better ,,, get what you like best!

I really don't know why people are concerned about wrist size, you should wear what you want unless it just looks like a clock on your wrist. In the past, 36mm used to be the regularsize...

Well when the first wrist watches started to be worn in the early 1920s basicaly then converted small pocket watches. Then after 2 world wars the average size of mens wrist watches was around 30 mm -34mm.And even back in those days there were big guys with large wrists.

A years back NFL players and heavywt champs wore 36mm DD's as a status symbol. I don't remember thinking their wrists were too big. Please, don't confuse fashion with style-- the watches didn't change-- just the fashion. Wear what you really like. If you're really hung up on the size, Invicta has some huge watches.

My wrist is 8 1/2" which is even bigger, I wear one occasionally and think it is fine. Then again I don't worry about others opinions regarding watch sizes, I have a 45mm PO and also a SG 1550 and think that can look a little large on my wrist yet I see people with 6" wrists wearing those!

No: I don't think it's too small; 36 mm should be fine; it's been the standard for how long? But get the one you like. I tried on a DJ II today on my 7 inch wrist and it is big, but it is also beautiful; and I saw two Japanese men with smaller wrists trying on the DJ II and it looked fine. Some people think the bezel is too big; my initial reaction as well; but as time has gone on and I've seen more and more of the DJ IIs and DD IIs, I just see them as different watch models from the traditional lines, with their own attributes. Yes; the bezel is big and wide and maybe out of proportion a bit if you expect to see a traditional DJ bezel and proportions; but if you just look at the watch as its own model, I think the bezel fits the larger case and looks fine. That's my opinion today.

I thought the DD II was "clownish" when I first saw it; but I'm considering buying one; so that's how far I've come around on the new models.

Don't worry about what others have to say but since you think 36mm is too small for your wrist then......it is.

I have the same size wrist and personally think the 36mm is too small ...but that's me.
Try them both and see what you like, don't settle because you will kick yourself later on.

For years I wished the DJ were bigger - then they did it and now I want a DJII but I just don't like the fluted bezel (this will save me some $$ for now.lol).

Good luck with your purchase!

-Pete

Thanks for all of the feedback guys. I have tried the DJ on a few times and I feel like it looks similar to the pic of The Danza (in other words, I feel like I should be carrying a box of chocolates and driving a Mini Cooper just like him).
I'm 6'4" 225lbs for those who referenced overall body size. I think I'll just wait until they come out with more options on the DJII until I find one I truly love, although I must say I've always wanted roman numerals but the sticks are REALLY growing on me!

It depends. I think it looks okay, depending on what your wearing.
If you are in long sleeves the watch will wear bigger than without. Its just how it is.

Also give the DJII a look, with a wrist as big as yours it should look fine.

I have a 7.75" wrist, 7.5" when Im not as heavy as I am now, and never found my DJ 36mm looking too small. Its a classic, period.

A guy your size would look big squeezed into a Ferrari too, doesn't mean you wouldnt drive one right?

You cant go wrong with the DJ, its the quintessential dress watch IMO.
However nothing is wrong with the DJII being you have one huge wrist either.

Go try on the DJ II get a pic or two and think on it for a while. Its half the fun. You could always go with a sport model too, They are fine for all occasions. Good luck and keep us posted !

Although I now have some larger watches, this 36mm TT DJ has served me well for the past 23 years . . . on my 8 3/8" wrist. In fact, I'm wearing it tonight when I take my 14 year old niece to her first concert of classical music.

Good luck.
