Advice needed for a trade
I posted this on a panerai and AP website too. obviously, people will be subjective but just want to exhaust all means before pulling the trigger.
I've got a trade proposal. My GMT IIc ('08) and PAM005 logo (G series) for a brand new Audemars Royal Oak 15300 black dial. straight up. I basically want a versatile watch to complete my all sports wach collection. I figure, I can easily buy back the GMT and the future and I really wanted only 1 rolex in my collection (and that would be a sea dweller). I still have a Breitling Avenger blacksteel and a IWC Galapagos. Should I do it? I know in the end, it's whatever floats my boat but I value others' opinion. This forum has been the most friendly and helpful group of people in the net, so fire on guys! |

No
I wouldn't, I've had rolex, panerai, and AP in the past. Honestly, I like the AP, although prefer the ROC and ROO much more.
You are giving up way more versatility in the Panerai and Rolex, considering you have a watch that fits under the sleeve, can be worn for work and a touch fancier events (rolex), plus you have the Panerai which has the added pop with the strap changes and great wrist presence. Not in love with the AP, giving up too much. Justin |

I like APs, but I love the II-C (even the PAM 005 is a fave PAM) so my answer would be very biased.
Good luck on your decision.

I don't think I would do it, if it were me.
You have the versatility you need in your GMTIIc and PAM. The AP doesn't bring much to the table.

Thanks guys!
appreciate all the opinions. seems like it's one-sided. i guess i won't consummate the deal.
any others care to chime in? i was thinking of replacing the GMT IIc with a sea dweller. in which case, i would still have versatility? what do you guys think? i know the royal oak looks a bit boring but i'm trying to veer away from the big watch trend. looking into owning a piece from the "big 3"... |

Life is full of ups and downs.
Chances are this won't be the last time you do a swap. Just do it. And 20 years from now you can sing "I did it my way". |

well, since you asked
Now, if you were talking an AP ROC, with the exotic dials. I have seen one for sale on timezone.com. That would definitely do it for me. Gets rid of the 'blandness' of the Royal Oak in question.
But my strong advice is, if you do not love the watches you have, sell them for cash. Then use that as a stronger negotiating stand when you are looking to buy the AP. From my own perspective, having all of those brands in the past, well, you need to watch the bezel on the AP. It's gorgeous, but a scratch magnet. |

If you were trying to trade up for an ROO Rubberclad--different story. So--stick with your Rolex and Panerai. AP is an awesome brand and makes one of the best watches but you have to move up to the next level for it to be worthwhile--just my opinion--to each his own though.

Also wanted to point out it doesn't look like a good trade from a value perspective. I see AP RO in Near Mint condition for $6,500. With your IIc at $5,300, I sure would snap up a PAM 005 for $1,200, as it has a value around $4K.
Now the IIc and $1,200 or PAM and $2,200, you may want to consider.

I don't care too much for ROOs...They always come up with "limited editions"....sort of defeats the purpose.

so my GMT IIc at $5,400 and my PAM005 at $3,100 i guess it's still not good on a value perspective. |

I normally don't chime in on these trade decisions BUT I would NOT do that trade. You happen to have an amazing combo already in the GMTc and the Pam!
