Rolex unused for 7 months, is this OK?

Hi just bought a watch as a present, I need to keep it hidden away until january. Do I need to get it out every now and again and wind it, or should I just leave it? Does anyone know what they do in the shops?

Hi buddy,

Nothing to worry about. If you give it just 40 turns of the crown (first give it a gentle shake to start it up) once a month, you should be fine. The rest of the time if it remains stopped, no problems at all.

It will be just fine. Ideally, you could take it out once a month or two and fully wind it approximately 30 complete turns and then put it back. However, if you don't it will be just fine.

I'm not positive what they do at the AD's, but I'm pretty sure they are never wound.

7 months is too much imho. i feel 6 months is the maximum time leaving a mechanical watch dead.

Au contraire, my friend.............the sales persons at AD's are instructed to give the automatic watches a 40-turn wind at least once a month. I know both my ADs have dealt out these instructions.

That's why you see some watches actually running even whilst they are sitting in the display windows.

Thank you, so if I wind it once a month (40 turns) and then put it back in the box is that OK?

Im sure its possible that from manufacture to purchase can quite often be longer than 7 months.

that would be ok i guess

you could rest it in different positions but that would be going OC

just make sure to that the gift is enjoyed is enough.

I think you shouldn't have to worry about any mechanical watch that is unused for 7 months.
