PVD vs. DLC

Can someone please explain to me the difference between them, and where can I get this service done without buying one already treated. I am just looking for a company that does this. Thanks.

I know that PVD = Physical Vapor Deposit which is the actual deposition of gold onto base metal to give that gold-plated look.

It's superior to the older gold-plating method, but of course, cannot be compared with solid 18K gold.

Not sure what DLC is.

I know a guy from another forum who will do it, but if it's with high end watches, you have to have your own watchmaker to disassemble and reassemble the watch. He'll just take care of coating the case and parts.

DLC is Diamond Like Carbon and is a coating that is MUCH more durable than PVD.

The guy's rates are pretty reasonable, and he did this one for me:

DLC is diamond like carbon coating. There are different forms of it and you can usually find industrial shops in your area that can apply it. Now will they do a watch, maybe not but I'm sure you can find somewhere that will. Project x and bamford and sons do it, but it's expensive.

From a cost point of view it's the equivalent of sending in 3 subs and letting them keep two of them for coating the third with a 10 micron thin black carbon covering.

No thanks.

I like the look of DLC black though and it would be great if Rolex added some options to the catalogue, especially the Sub and Milguass GV.

PVD = Physical Vapor Deposition (the process of applying a vaporized coating to something)

DLC= Diamond Like Coating (a vaporized coating)

PVD is a process. DLC is a type of coating. DLC coating is applied using the PVD process.

It's like "brush" and "paint"

Paint is applied using a brush.

DLC is applied using PVD.

Got my PAM done by Jack at IWW and couldn't be happier.

Great info JF23! Your PAM looks killer! I love it!

+1 on DLC being much more durable than your standard PVD coating.

I just had my IWC Pilot Chrono sand blasted and DLC'ed by ABC Watchwerks in LA. They do amazing work. I'm really loving the tactical (ceramic) look!

Tome and gems want $2k. They have a Youtube video showing the process - pretty detsiled and certainly appears to be involved but nothing close to $2k in labor.

I have heard that there is someone in N Carolina who doea the DLC well for 1/2 that. Anyone with experience there or elsewhere? Cost and time?
