Thinking of selling or trading my Speedy for a Datejust.
Well my situation has changed for the better here, slightly.
We were able to reach and agreement and stay in our current residence. This is good as now we wont have to move for at least a year now. So my fire sales of watches has ceased and not a moment too soon. Anyway, while we will be okay for the foreseeable future here now, we wont have much discretionary funds either. The job market here in south Florida is beyond abysmal at the moment and has been for the last two years it seems. Im currently a student trying to finally get my nursing degree completed, after stopping and starting twice over the last eight years. This brings me to my current quandary. I really miss my Rolex watches. I dont wear my Speedmaster much as its vintage and I dont want to beat on it. I usually wear my G-Shock or an old Seiko my brother gave me. I loved my Datejust, classic, understated and pure Rolex. It goes with everything from shorts and sandals, which I wear 90% of my time here, to jeans and a polo, to scrubs, or a suit. Truly a versatile watch if there ever was one, its the Datejust. My brothers friend has a very nice DJ, all stainless with a black face and silver stick markers. Beautiful watch and made me realize just how much I miss mine. I have seen plenty of older DJ 1601 models in very good shape, in the $1400-2000 USD range. They are incredible watches for the money. They look great and are all around cool. Its a Rolex right? I was thinking of either selling my 69' Speedy and buying a nice DJ, or trading it, as its worth around the value of the 1601 DJ I am sure. I know there are a lot of 1601 DJ out there, maybe more than there are 69' Speedmasters. Im torn and Im not sure what to do. I want the DJ a bit more, and I dont wear my Speedy at all anymore. I also feel that if the unfortunate need to sell should arise again down the road a Rolex will sell faster than anything. I sold my last two in under two hours each locally after listing them. The Omega is a beautiful piece and WIS will want one forever, it simply wont bring the fast cash a Rolex would. I hope Im not in such a position again, but if life has taught me anything now, its that we will always end up where we do not want to be, its how we get through it that defines us. So I plan for the hard times. Nothing says currency on the wrist like Rolex. Thanks for any input guys, I wanted to post here before putting an ad in the sales area. You have all been so helpful and supportive every step of the way. |

Well, if you are living closer to the edge financially, I say just be patient and get your feet on solid ground! These are luxury items after all....

mmm... interesting. i would've thought a '69 Speedy (auusming it is a Pro) will be more valuable than a DJ in many years time - i could be wrong though....
wait and save would be my suggestion also |

You have put a lot of thought into your situation and are certainly moving in the right direction. Agree, that it is not as easy to get rid of you vintage Speedy. It is also difficult to obtain one for a decent price if you decide to obtain one later. Stating the obvious, your going to do what you want to do. That said. Keep the Speedy and wait until the financial footing is more solid for the DJ. My two cents.

Thanks for all of the input guys.
I wasn't going to spend out of pocket, I was going to either trade the Speedy or sell it and use the funds to purchase a DJ. I preferred my DJ even over my GMT. Just something its classic lines and understated elegance. |

I agree that the DJ is a great classic design.
However, I went the opposite route. I sold my DJ to fund a new Speedmaster Pro. Here's a pic of the DJ before it was sold: Whatever you decide, they're both great watches. If I had to do it over again, I'd keep the DJ and bought the Speedy. |

Keep the speedy, save for the DJ. They are a common watch so there is no need to rush, you may regret it!

Take a deep breath, hold on to the '69 Speedy, and sell it in a year or two if you still want the DJ (or a car, or a new job somewhere else, or two DJs).
I have two late 60s Speedies that I hardly wear too, but the DJ is long gone. Frankly, the DJs are a dime a dozen, whereas the '69 Speedy will just continue to appreciate.

You guys as always are a huge help.
There are about forty pages of Datejust on Ebay right now. There are eight listed Speedmasters that are around the same year as mine and that says it all I guess. Thanks again guys. I actually have a line on a full time job here soon, which would be great, I can start a Rolex fund on the side again. In time Ill have both timepieces. Sometimes you get caught up in things and you get tunnel vision. I know I do at least. |

You're a student. What watch you wear is the least of your worries. Focus on your studies. If the nursing crunch is as bad as I hear it is, you'll have that DJ in your first year of practice. |

The Speedy Pro is such a special watch, every watch lover needs to have one in their collection. I have a strong feeling that if you sold you speedy, it would be one of the watches you regret selling the most down the road.
