Why Rolex, why now?
Everyone has their individual reasons to buy, own and wear or not any watch.
But what drives you to buy, own and wear a Rolex? To each his own... __________________ |

I personally like the looks, history, and quality. It's not the only watch brand that I own but it's one of my favorites. It also holds its value as good as any of the other top watch manufactures.

Just figured it was the time. :)
I've been hearing tons of stuff about Rolex throughout my life, I used to be one of those "I would never wear Rolex." But as I get old and looking around, nothing fit except Rolex to be honest. |

Rolex, not now for me. Odd as it might sound, after years of loving my Rolex watches, they are the last watches I want to wear. I realised a few weeks ago that my favorite watches right now all are brands that are on the sub forums here on TRF, Omega, Panerai and Breitling.
I realised that my favorite bracelet watch is my Omega Speedmaster 3570, my favorite rubber strap watch is my Breitling Superocean Heritage, and my favorite leather strap watch is my Panerai 183. All the bases are covered with that trio, and it feels like a relief to not feel the need to wear a Rolex. You know it's crazy, but I feel like other brands want my busisness more and almost deserve it more. Rolex is the marketing king and that sells watches for them, they could care less about me as a customer. I recently picked up my first Breitling, bought it as a summer pool/beater watch. I wanted a rubber strap diver and of course, Rolex won't wake up and make a rubber strap for their divers, which is a complete joke IMHO. Well I found the superocean heritage line, was actually going to buy a IWC Aquatimer but the micro adjustment which adjust by a simple push of a lever underneath the clasp on the Breitling sold me. Well, the watch is great, keeps great time, great finish on the case and clasp, crown lines up perfectly which Rolex could also do but does not, and came with the COSC cert which Rolex also does not provide. It's just a well made diver for a fraction of the price of a Rolex diver, and Breitling appreciates me as a customer. A few days ago I get a gift in the mail, it was from Breitling, not my local AD. They sent me a nice Breitling hat and a little note thanking me for the purchase, stuff like that can go a long way. I think of how loyal I was to Rolex for years, and now I wonder why, must have been the marketing that got into my head. So to answer you question of Why Rolex, I have no answer these days.

For me, I've owned many watches throughout my life and as things have progressed
with time & alarms available on your cell phone, its progressed from just function to form and style. I had never owned a Rolex until 2010 and I now have 2 of them that I hope to last me for as long as I can lift my wrist to look at them. Why now? Its probably that I can afford the luxury $$; a reward for myself for saving in a discipline manner and with my Dad's failing health I realize that its also important to live for today as well as save for tomorrow. Thanks & have a great Independence Holiday weekend! |

My father owned and had lost a Pepsi. We searched for it for days. Now that I can afford to I'm going to make a sentimental purchase and get myself a Pepsi in memory of my Father.

Great reason to get a Pepsi. Tradition, especially a family tradition, help make a Rolex special.

I did not want to buy a Rolex, I was happy with my Seiko.
Some 43 years ago my summer job manager and the Rolex traveling salesman twisted my arm to buy a funny looking watch called Daytona Chronograph ref:6239 with regular push buttons..you know the 3 little thingies on the side. I do not remember if it was $175 $200 $ or $250 for that funny watch with an exotic dial according to Rolex. Now I buy 'cause I am a Rolex addict and although I am trying to sell my entire collection my addiction forces my wrist to wear this marque and buy the damn watch again and again. |

As far as I can remember, I've been fascinated with watches. Swatches when I was in Junior High, Tags when i didn't know any better...
Rolex just seemed the epitome of the enthusiasm. Now that I know of other brands, it seems there are more prestigious brands out there. But since Rolex has never disappointed me, I am blissfully within the fold, so to speak.

Reading those James Bond books by Ian Fleming and the descriptions of Bonds watches started me off. I was a very impressionable 8 year old in those days.
Thanks, Ken |

1) My favorite male archtype/performers wear them: James Bond, Kanye West, Ralph Lauren, etc (so I was exosed to the brand at an ealy age).
2) Virtually every person young or old, in some form or fashion, are familiar with "Rolex" as a high luxury watch. 3) Rolex is just a damn good watch maker! 4) It has a certain air of class and exclusivity. |

My grandfather wore Rolex when I was young and it was the first brand that I know (that 1601 belongs to me now).
I had been dreaming of a one rolex sport and I received one brand new Submarine from my father as a gift when I graduated. After that I researched more about Rolex and other brands as well. I also bought many other brands but finally I sold out other brands and start collecting Rolex only. I like the history and the classic design of Rolex. |

For me Rolex (sports range) offer good quality, good looking watches and your unlikely to loose money on buying a decent pre-owned one.
I have to say i think that the prices are starting to get a little silly now new and especially old |

Started with a swatch when I was 8, awhile later I received a tag formula one for graduation in 96. Tried every watch from: movado (which is embarrassing) a newer tag formula one, a monza, ebel, montblanc etc. Anyways I decided after all the feeble attempts for a swiss timepiece to try the ultimate watch. Rolex of course. 5 datejust, 1 turnograph, and a submariner ( which keeps time within 1 second of accuracy) later wouldn't swith to another brand for anything. Not only that, but my subdate holds it's value. Not the case with any other watch I've owned.

Really interesting question.....
Quote:
I've owned "better" marques than Rolex, including Jaeger LeCoultre and Girard Perregaux. I've owned marques that deliver far more watch accuracy and functions for far less money (Seiko, Suunto, Traser, Ball). I've owned watches that have better lume (GP, Ball, Omega, Seiko). And yet, as I type this I'm wearing a Sub LV with a black bezel insert, and debating on going to the new black TT Sub or back to the Deepsea, having decided that Rolex works best for me now, just as it did when I wore my GMT Master from 1981 until 2004. It really isn't rational. It is successful advertising. "A crown for every achievement". I still remember the advertisements with Red Adair putting out oil well fires wearing his Rolex, and thinking to myself that if I became good at what I did, I would wear a Rolex also. I moved away from the marque, thinking that only tossers and punters and footballers still wore Rolex, only to find myself back again, feeling reassured to know that I'm wearing a go anywhere, do anything, watch that is equally at home with a Tuxedo, or far under the surface in the ocean. So, I guess my answer is... " I don't know, but I'm wearing one". |
