I don't get it, what makes the Yachtmaster a Yachtmaster?
And I'm not talking about the Yachtmaster II which seems like a very complicated watch, but I just mean the Yachtmaster. I believe it has the 3135 right? Besides the precious metal and red second hand, why is the Yachtmaster in a category by itself? What makes it a Yachting watch?

IMHO each toolwatch has its own "special powers" - the Sub can go deep, the SD can go deeper, the GMT can travel, and the YM can make you look good (which is what matters in regattas, I gather).

Yea, was going to say that it's a shiny watch intended for rich guys who like to do expensive things.

Yachtmaster is everywhere but in regatta's
I Have been in several major west coast regatta's this year. Havent seen a single YM worn on a boat in a race or even at the yacht club bar after the races. I see a lot of subs/SD's, datejusts and even a couple airkings. NO YM's...LOL.
Maybe they are popular with the powerboat crowd...... |

Nice watch, Tim. I saw a solid gold one with a brown MOP dial this afternoon in Tokyo and was sorely tempted. Trouble is; the watch looks so good that I'd just look worse in comparison! The one I saw is used and under 13K USD. It looked to be in perfect condition. I was afraid to look at the papers. I'd just be too tempted. I owned a SS Pt YM for over 5 years. I just thought of it as a dressier Sub; which was fine for me and my office. I climbed Mt Fuji with that watch.
Sorry for typos, if any. I'm typing on my iPad on a moving train. |

The YM2 has the 10 minutes count down feature , in most regattas the boats will circle before the start line . The starter canon will mark a shot ten minutes before the official start shot . A skipper will use that feature so he makes sure he completes his turn just before the start line with the wind in his sails . The rest is of course marketing . The original YM is just a Rolex watch with no special yachting applicable features

It's a comfortable watch to wear, I'll tell you that - but, then again, my YM has non-SELs and seems lighter. But it fits me better than almost any timepiece, so, despite an almost constant yearning to get rid of it and get a ND Sub, I keep it.

I own a Sub, my ears pop in the bath tub(the one time I went diving, I wore a digital watch).
I own a YM, I don't "yacht" I own a Daytona, I spend most of my day in stop-and-go traffic I know that each of these Rolex tool watches have a purpose but I am with the majority that buy them 'cause I enjoy them, they are beautiful pieces of craftsmanship and they make me smile when I wear them. Happy Birthday USA! -Pete

It's a personal choice.
YM's look much better in person than in photos. They are very comfortable watches to wear. |

Yacht master, gold and steel - very attractive, prestige, water-proof like submariner, the gold gives it a million dollar look

I think the one thing they should have done with YM was instead of the Subs bezel markers:
v''''|''''10''''| 20 | ...etc. which seems to put emphasis on 15 minutes to this: V''''5''''| 15 20. This puts emphasis on accuracy on the 10th minute. I hope my description is understandable. |
