Rolex Dials

My question is related to the markers on the Rolex dials. On the vintage models, over the years they tended to turn yellow . I know Rolex uses different materials with the newer watches but does any of that aging happen with the new watches. ie. from the 1980's or the 1990's

It is the tritium (lume material) on the older models that develops a nice patina over time. The current models (early 1990's to present--not sure on the exact date of the switch, so I may be off here) use Super Luminova (or SL II) on the dial and hands. Since it is a relatively newer material, I don't think we've had enough time with the material to see how it ages.

I'm thinking it stays more white than the tritium though I may be wrong.

Nice--good info. I didn't realize the switch to Luminova was so late. So I'm thinking since Luminova does not self degrade over time, it will not yellow like Tritium or Radium.

I think (not certain )Seiko used Luminova before the Swiss companies did. From personal experience with some vintage Seikos, the lume had some slight discoloration (mostly at the edges) but was still mostly white, even after 30+ years. It also still had some functionality.

Larry has one I have not been able to locate however it is about the same information. Great reading material in wanting a authentic 5513 dial and hands I really studied the lume and the dates to get it correct.
