collections

I don't know if this has been asked before but I am curious as to why some collectors have 5 or 6 of the same model Rolex such as Submariners
or Sea dwellers..I have seen pics were some have 2 different daytona's
which I figure 1 for different occasions just don't understand have 5 or 6
of the same watch...

WIS's are insatiable.

Bank accounts, it seems, could be emptied out, but PASSION, is never satisfied.

There are those that build collections around one specific reference. To them the changes or "evolution" of a particular reference holds a great fascination.

It's worth noting as well that because of those collectors that "specialize" in a particular reference we are all better for it as our collective knowledge of the subtlies of a reference is enhanced as most are more than willing to share the fruits of their research.

I never really understood that either. Even if I were rich, I think I would get one of a model and then move onto another for variety.

Like car collectors who focus on a particular brand/ model/ year, WIS collections have their own focus. They may look similar, but it's the slight subtleties that are appreciated by the enthusiast.

Much like a non-WIS always thinks we're nuts to keep buying more than one Rolex, it's much the same for collectors who simply take it to another level.

Well, let's see...........

For Subs you need:

A 6200
A 5508
A 6536
A 5512
A 5513
A 1680
A 1680 in red
A 16800
A 168000

And toss in some COMEX models, unusual dials, Brevet crowns, and modern 16610 references and you actually have a very nice "collection" of Subs...

If you have a Sub, a Daytona, and a DJ; you simply have 3 nice watches... but you really don't have a "collection", unless your plan is to have one or each mode - then you have a nice start...

I concur. I've gotten WAAAYY more watches in the past year than I ever thought I would, but they all have a different look and feel. The only two that are similar is a no date sub (my original start to this madness) and a new GMT IIC, but even they are different because of the larger case and the date feature. The rest of my collection looks like a gathering of the United Nations.
I do understand the desire for some collectors to focus in on a narrower range, however. That's what makes these posts interesting, all the different opinions.
