Scots wha hae

I grew up near Glasgow but haven't been back to Scotland in over 20 years. Going back tomorrow for two and a half weeks and taking my wife and kids for the first time. We will tour around Glasgow, Edinburgh, St. Andrews, Inverness, Skye, and Oban - hopefully will post some pics. Any suggestions for good pubs greatly appreciated.

Bring your umbrella Tom.
Another dark wet midsummer day here.
Also, can you bring some sunshine and blue sky?

There are many good pubs in Glasgow and many too be avoided.
I suppose it all depends on what sort of pub you are looking for, whether it be modern or traditional.

One place that has some nice bar/restaurants is Princess Square, on Buchanan St. right across from Frasers.

Some pubs that I would recommend are:
The Counting House on George Square (formerly a bank)
The Auctioneers (across from The Counting House)
All Bar One
The Bon Accord on North Street
The Griffin
The Station Bar at Cowcaddens

I would also advise going to Byres Road and Ashton Lane- easy to get to by subway, and alight at Hillhead.
Ubiquitos Chip, Tennents, The Arigon, Three Judges etc are all here, plus some others.
Plus some good restaurants.

I could probably go on forever as I have visited a few of these establishments for a glass of lemonade now and again.

Tom - have a great trip. hope the weather gets better for you (they have been getting some heavy rain lately..)

the wife and i went on a 3 day Skye Tour (inc. Loch Ness) - it was awesome! make sure you bring some insect replent thing cos i got attacked by the midges, and was still itching 2 weeks after the trip.

we had a beautiful 3 days and and did not see the Monster

have fun and look forward to seeing your pix!

ps - if you are a Whisky fan, make sure you have a dinner arranged at the Fiddler's at Loch Ness. they have over 600 whiskies to choose from. Whisky and haggas... loved it!

Thanks John and Eric. I appreciate the suggestions. Maybe we'll bring some hot Canadian summer weather with us. The trip may involve a few drams or pints.

Sounds great, Tom! Also, PM Johny for info around Glasgow, and andypandy for info in the Edinburgh area.

Wish I were going, but alas, I have to wait until 2013 to visit Scotland again. I WILL be in southern England for a month next year, though!

Hope you have a great time

I don't think its stopped raining here since the moment I woke up this morning.
Scottish summers can be the best ever if you get the weather\ the most miserable if you don't

mmmhhh. You mentioned kids & from that perspective depending on the ages i.e. if young - I'd be tempted to give most of the pubs in Glasgow a miss. I can't think of any pubs in town I'd take my 11 year old daughter into with me. Few years ago - I dropped my other 1/2 off for a girls lunch/ my daughter & I went into a place called Dimaggios in royal exchange square - they do a great pizza & can have a few beers with your dinner

I regularly have a pint in the counting house & the auctioneers which great for meeting for a pint after work but maybe not so good for family. Just my opinion.

I had a great dinner recently in the west end at a place called The Bothy
(11 Ruthven Lane). Its about a 2 min walk from hillhead underground. Was the business.

Also if you've got access to a PC & watching your cash - you get a lot of good deals on 5pm.co.uk

If your not watching your cash & want a great meal but at a price- try the Rogano in Royal Exchange Square.

Look forward to the pictures

I wouldn't take kids into any pubs in Glasgow, or most U.K. cities for that matter, but the ones I have suggested are in my opinion, safe for adults.

Like most cities, there are an abundance of restaurants of all types, but Edinburgh is probably better for the culinary expert, having several Michelin
Star establishments.

Glasgow is reputably better for shopping.

3 AD's within yards of each other. What more could you ask for?

You will see many changes in Glasgow, if you have not visited for 20 years.

A totally different city.

John, my kids are young adults and they are also looking forward to the pubs. Can't wait to see all the changes in Glasgow. I hear it is not as rough and tumble as I remember as a kid and from my last visit. Will pop into the ADs.

If they are young adults Tom, they would like the Byres Road/Ashton Lane area. It has lots of bars, cafes, restaurants and is mostly frequented by students of all nationalities.

One of the safest areas of the city.

Its also good for mature adults as we go there quite frequently with our son and daughter.

Hope you have a fantastic time.

While you are there, I was scammed a few months ago for $3200. (Bought a sub on Watchuseek and received a fake.) His name is George Campbell, he lives at 8 Riverview Gardens, Glasgow, G5 8EL. Can you pay him a visit for me :) or maybe just take a picture of his place.

Thanks

What do you want Tom to do? Kill him??

He doesn't have to take a picture for you - you have the address. Use Google Maps Street View and you can see the house yourself.

He should go himself. There's nothing like the satisfaction of a personal job of retribution well done!

The Paisley Nod is more Scottish - a quick forehead to the bridge of the nose! Not that I am going to get involved in any way.

You don't want to try a Glasgow Kiss!

It sure makes your eyes water...and your nose bleed.

Could also make your Rolex disappear at the same time.

There is no Scotsman in the world called Tom ! Your name is Tam ! Got it ? You'll soon be
back among yer ain folk Tam and we're all waiting to greet you. In one of the Posts , you
were warned about The Midges.... don't underestimate the misery the Wee Buggers can
cause. I am now going to advise you on a wonder product that usually works well as anti-midge protection......Avon Skin So Soft oil. I know several anglers who have used it
and I do too. You realise that one of the hardest things to find in Scotland are places
that sell Scottish Food ? In Edinburgh , I can recommend Kitchins (sic) The Witchery,
Martin Fishers, Fishers On The Shore. Pubs ? Cafe Royale , West Register St, The Canny Mans, Morningside Rd and the last authentic coal-burning , steam-driven and
proper pub in town....The Foresthill Bar....alias...Sandy Bell's, in Forrest Rd. Greyfriars.
Enjoy your visit in Auld Reekie...the city where you can wear a Rolex with impunity, 'cos
maist folk cannae read !
