Sapphire Crystal?
Can someone please help me? I have a single quickset 18kt yg Men's Presidential with refernce # X88132 and was wondering if this particular watch has a sapphire crystal? I have been noticing others with newer watches have a more reflective case than mines and wanted to know if there are different versions of sapphire crystal that Rolex came out with besides the new laser rolex crown inside the crystal.
Please respond? |

Kiss the glass...
If it's cold it's sapphire...if it's warm it's acryllic. ...and look for scratches. If there are any scratches, even minor ones, you can be pretty sure it's not sapphire. And last clue - an acryllic stands very high above the case and has nice rounded edges. A sapphire will be flatter, and have less curve. Ohh I just noticed the "X" in front of the serial number. This means it's from approx. 1991 - so it's very likely a sapphire. I believe the sapphire was introduced on the Datejust, at around the time Rolex started putting letters (starting with "R") in the beginning of their serial numbers...that's about 1988. (Others where changed for sapphire yearlier on, for instance on the Submariner in approx. 1984). The laser cut symbol is somewhere after year 2000, I think...So yes, you can say that there's two types of sapphire. With and without the laser cut symbol...
