Icon6 Would you buy this GMT II?

Looking for advice... walked into a local chain jeweler and they had some estate pieces. They had a coke GMT II from 1997. Condition was ok, case had minor scratches and swirls, no dents. Bracelet was typical, not too much stretch but lots of scratches.

The jeweler claimed they don't polish them because some people want to find them as-is etc. They promised to include a trip to NY RSC in the final price. I could not get them to say they would request a full service just a polish and checkup.

Hands/crystal/bezel all looked good and original. Bezel insert was probably recent.

Watch has no box/papers or history. The jeweler offers a 2 year warranty and says all issues would be handled by Rolex. They are a Rolex AD, but not at this location. Other locations in the chain carry Rolex.

It was marked $4000 and they were having a 25% off everything in the store sale so the final price would be $3000 including the trip to RSC.

Mass is having a tax-free weekend, but it is only valid on items under $2500. I kept trying to negotiate the price to $2499 with no luck.

Owning a GMT is on my list. In a perfect world I want a GMT (not GMT II) on a jubilee. The bracelet is an easy pickup here on TRF of course.

What do you think? Fair price for the watch as described with what's included? I only will buy if its a screaming bargain. Else I will look here on TRF for one. Seems like similar watches sell for more here on TRF but they mostly include papers and are in better condition. What say you?

Tony, insist that with their asking price the watch be fully serviced by RSC, not just polished and a check up. $3K is not bad at all imho.

Yup. Good price - especially if you are not set on selling. The full service would be very cool.

Pristine GMTIIs with B&P are going for 4.5k or so here. Just FYI.

$3k is a good price without the full service. Maybe ask for a few bucks off for not sending it to RSC for the polish and sendit in yourself for the service you want.

Talk to Steve Mulholland about a fresh service, and polish. Buy it for $2,800 and do the rest through Steve

Too bad they won't set the price to $2499 and add a handling charge or bracelet cost of $499! So what's Mass' sales tax? ; )

$3k is a very good price for a 10 year old GMT (there is no way to actually know that it is a 1997 watch without the original paper).. If it includes a trip to an RSC, it is a steal..

But here are a couple of things... Typically an RSC doesn't do a "check-up and polish".. It just isn't on their menu..

- They will do a service request, but that should be accompanied by their written and verified estimate..

- They seldom ever refinish a watch without a service too.

- If it does go to the RSC, and they do service and refinish it... it would include the RSC warranty, pouch, etc...

- Sounds to me like it will go to the watchmaker in the back for a quick plish and cleaning..

As stated that's a nice price especially considering a trip to RSC (if they mean it).

As Larry said RSC will want to do a full service(your advantage as it will include paperwork and be in the system.)

Explain to the seller that it's a project watch with no papers. State your max price to the dealer, and put the ball in his court.

Just remember that there have been several here on TRF in great shape, boxes & papers for $3,700 ish serviced, and polished.

There have been a few here for less without B & P.

I sold a beautiful 16750 Pepsi 2 weeks ago here for $3,500, and it even had a 1 year service warranty from Steve Mulholland. I'd remember that there are good prices here, and if you purchase this one keep the price down.

$3K is a very good price even if you get the service done yourself and they cut you back some savings. Have them ship to NH and save the tax.
