Is there a difference between fake and aftermarket?

I stopped by one of those "We buy Gold, Diamonds, and Rolex" places yesterday it was a very nice place more like a high end jewelry store than a pawn shop located next to a strip club (which it was).

I was talking to the saleswoman and she said all their watches are checked by a watchmaker they use and he will refuse to work on a fake. Their watches do not come with papers but they guarantee authenticity. I asked if I took it to an AD and they said it was a fake could I get my money back and she said yes.

OK that was their watches but they had several Rolex dials and bezels on display she said some are real and some are aftermarket but she does not know which are which. Is aftermarket just a nice name for fake too me if it’s not genuine Rolex than it’s a fake you can call it aftermarket all you want.

Fake = coronet, branding, and hallmarks
Aftermarket = does not pretend to be Rolex, so no coronet, branding, and hallmarks.

All of the dials had coronets she said they were a mix so maybe the bezels were aftermarket.

The term aftermarket can also refer to mods to original parts. ie adding diamonds to a genuine dial, adding diamonds to the case lugs, etc.
I would not want anything but genuine factory diamonds, etc. But, the market for these dials is good and they are FAR cheaper than factory. I would refer to these as fake, even though the dial, diamonds, etc are "real".

Aftermarket dials are counterfeit dials. Altered dials are usually genuine dials that have had diamonds or other stones added to the dial.

Refinished dials are genuine dials that have been refinished, which is a very accepted practice in the watch industry when replacement dials are no longer available. The RSC will normally not work on watches that have had the dials refinished or altered because they will not warranty any repairs with these type of dials. They also won't work on watches with aftermarket -fake - dials.
