Should I buy my 10 month old son a new ceramic sub and give it to him in 20 years? I am talking about not touching it and 'saving' it for him. If not I will always have my own that I'd be able to pass on.

It would be one of the 1st sub-c's released here in Canada too...

Please answer the poll question. I am going to let TRF make this decision for me 100%!!!!!!!!

If you mean your gonna enjoy it, have it serviced and pass it on then I say go for it. But if your gonna just put it in a safe for 20 years then I say no.

I would say no because with today's huge production numbers I don't think any current model will ever be a scarce collectors item, and I don't think the price appreciation will compensate for the lost investment potential of the purchase price over 19 yrs. JMO.

As mentioned, I'd say the watch would have much more meaning to him if it were your watch that carried the memories of him seeing it on you as he grows up.

I've seen countless well-meaning parents give something of high value to young adults and they just sell it to get what they are interested in. That would really hurt your feelings if it happened to you.

So I say buy it for you and journal entries about it. Then leave it to him. even if he doesn't grow up to like watches like you, he'd love the history.

When I turned 18 my dad gave me his 1966 T-Brid convertible, it did not run and needed some body work and I was never a big car guy so like a douche bag I sold it never thinking that it would hurt my dad.

Safer I would have thought to put aside/invest the money in an account for him.

Just yesterday I received a 1972 1675 GMT (the year I was born)...I am ecstatic about it...I think it is an awesome idea.

I vote no. Better idea: put the purchase price in its own "watch account," invest it, and buy something then with the money. I bet you'll come out ahead. Besides, a 20-year-old Rolex is better than no Rolex at all, but I'd still prefer a new one.

Agreed - I'd also mention that fashions will likely have changed in 20 years' time, a Sub may be too big/small/flashy/demure by then. Who knows, people might go back to pocket watches

I think the gesture of putting aside some money and growing it would be nice

I am already setting investing for his benefit. I just figured the fact that the year he was born and the new sub came out were the same year. Adds to the gift's wow factor when I give it to him.

That's amazing! How did you come to owning it now?

I would like to find a 1976 Rolex for my birth year but it is one of those obscure years for whatever reason. I think it's a GREAT idea, to have a Rolex from the year you were born. Especially when it was bought new and put aside as a special gift.

I also agree with the other poster that said to wait a few months for the hype and prices to come down a bit then get one and put it away.

I can't even imagine finding one in BNIB condition twenty years after I was born. It would have cost a fortune and been very hard to find a mint 20 year old Rolex.

I lucked out by seeing in it for sale here on TRF earlier this week...I may have missed out if Rob (seller) hadn't mentioned the year in the ad's heading. I could only be happier if had been a complete package (which I am still looking for).
