I ruined a Rolex dial
I put up a spare dial on the bay after I did a dial exchange on my datejust.
Someone thought there were some stains, so I tried cleaning the surface a bit with some alcohol and Q-tips and eventually, the lettering started coming off!!! I wish I wouldn't have messed with it. I've pulled the ad... Is anyone interested in an original but messed up dial for refinishing? ***Where can I sell this thing now?*** Did I mention this: |

It's toast.
It has as much value now as a used kleenex. May as well get the idea of 'selling' it out of your mind. Sorry.

Didn't mean to make fun of your bad situation Juggernaut, sorry you are out some money and don't have a nice dial anymore. I wish you the best, maybe one of our TRF workers can restore it(?). But please do post pics, we can learn from this unfortunate instance.

Yeah, I usually love to post photos, but I was so ashamed at my stupidity on this one, that I was embarrassed.
It's certainly a good lesson to learn from. I'm glad this was the SPARE DIAL that I replaced, and that I didn't try alcohol on the new dial. I always see those aftermarket dials that are refinished genuine Rolex dials...this would be a candidate for one of those....? |

Never try to clean the dial "at home".

Thats alright, but I can beat that with my recent idea to make the dial on my SUB look more "vintage" by zapping it with UV and a magnifying glass while gettinga a tan in my backyard !!!

I'd find a good redialer and do it. That way, you have a spare spare.

Sorry to hear that you've ruined your dial. Since it's ruined why don't you try to personalize it?

First I tried steam cleaning, then came the "great" idea to use alcohol...
I was a bit surprised though that the paint was alcohol-based rather than something more organic like acetone. But at least I was able to contribute something "not to do" to my friends here at TRF... |

Just fill it in with a thin black marker, nobody will know the difference on your wrist.

Sorry to hear, next time look for some Rodico.
Jocke BTW. Alcohol is made to drink, it's abuse to use it for something else.

Can't see no read door.
Seriously, I would use the rest of the booze and wipe out everything but "ROLEX" - then personalize it with ..............Juggernaut II.............. ............Fuhgeddaboudit!........... or your cool phrase of choice...

Would you say that the dial is possible to repair, Jocke, or is it scrap now?

Of course it's possible to have it re-painted but since you can buy them, (any color in good condition) on e-bay and other places for $50 - $100 why bother. |
