A 1601 revived....
Hi
I must admit, I have no idea what a Rolex looks like before I saw an old one. I always thought that it, being an expensive brand, has a lot of blings on it (diamond encrusted and made of gold). Was I wrong when my dad lent me his Rolex for my wedding. (right! I had to return it.Bummer) Years later that very same Rolex was given to me. Dad felt sorry I'm still wearing the same beat up Swiss Army Watch I've been using since college. It looks more like a seiko (no offense) with its gold looking like bronze with no shine at all. the bezel looks like bronze, the crystal, with some scratches. In other words, really old and unused. But heck, it's still a rolex. No wonder he kept it in a safe after my wedding. He prefers the newer sapphire models, also kept in the safe. (to each his own I guess). After a few days lurking in the forum, I saw people use warm to hot water, dishwashing soap and a kid's toothbrush to clean a dirty watch. As advised by forumers, I did not have it polished to brand new state. old watches have character and the scratches add to it. A day after cleaning, here it is.... A 1973 TT DJ Blueface Stick I'm stupid at taking photos It looks better especially under the sun. I'm especially concerned with the band stretch, more so as the watch is more than 30 years old. I have plans to change this to croc leather and put the band to storage to preserve it. Thanks for looking. More to come. |

That's a beautiful watch, but,it's the other way around: Seikos look like Rolexes.

I cleaned it further today and got some skin . Hopefully I get good shots as the pics above still shows a watch roughed up with age. |

Looking good! Being roughed up with age is perfectly fine, that's part of the charm!

give it a light polish with a cape cod cloth. It wont take off a lot of material or remove heavy scratches, but it will bring back some of the shine. You can probably use the same cloth to buff out the crystal nice and clear again.
Beautiful watch, congrats! |

More Spit Shine!

After some spit shinning, here's the result (low resolution shots...sorry) That's it. That's as much as I can do short of bringing it to the pros for polish. I'm satisfied with its looks. Seikos be damned, it now looks like a Rolex! A Dressy Vintage Rolex at that! |

Beautiful!!! Before you get too carried away with the soap and water, you may want to make sure the gaskets on the crown are still watertight.
