Oyster brevet 6480 serial #132350
My Father in-law gave me His watch in 2001 shortly before he passed away,it has water damaged due to cracked cover and bracelet is not the original. I want to fix it and wonder if it is worth it? I kept it in my safe since 2001 till this week, is keeping time ok, face is black, casing is silver. I dont know the history of the watch prior to my father in law ownership. will ask my mother in law for some info...hopefully she knows something. Any suggestions or coments are welcome. Thanks...Sincerely, P. Monche, Clearwater Fl

Spoke to my in-law, She stated that her Husband bought the watch sometime after 1960 in Brooklyn, NY. my father in law used to work at The Brooklyn Navy Yard around that time, Unable to provide me with more information.

I have moved this over to the vintage section as you might get some better replies there...
Papo, welcome to TRF and I hope you get the answers your looking for! There are lots of well versed folk here in the vintage side.... Is that the watch in question in your Avatar?? If so,post a larger pic here on the thread as it will aid others in your questions!

Thank You!!!! I continue to look for info. about this Rolex all over the internet. As per some web site list, this model serial number is from 1939-41? That was news to me, incredible!!! I contacted a Rolex authorized dealer near my residence and they sent the watch to Rolex for a restoration..I was told that I will be contacted with an estimate on the restoration. Hope that someone at Rolex could give me more info about it,ea. production year, price then and value now ect. Watch has a great sentimental value so I decided to go ahead and fix it.

Don't let the service center change the dial or hands. You will lose all value.

I suspect he means have them cleaned and I agree.
That is a great old watch and it looks like it will clean up nicely. Make sure to post pics when you get it back! |

That’s awful as that is the only way to “officially” get a new Rolex bracelet from Rolex US. The RSC requires having the watch in hand which they did. It would have been nice for them to mention it to you assuming you want a new Rolex steel bracelet. The bracelet is one of the few parts of a Rolex watch they will provide without a service assuming the watch does not have any aftermarket parts on it. If you want a period correct bracelet, there are a few brokers around here that can get you one including one not far from you. Let us know how your meeting goes with Ernest. Remember to ask about keeping period correct.

Thanks for your suggestion..make's perfect sense, will try to meet with Mr. Ernest ASAP. As per bracelet I will see what Mr. Ernest recommends, if there something else that matches and fits perfect with this Rolex I will consider that option too. Again thanks for your advise, always welcome....:)

What a pretty movement!
Quick, throw that awful band away! You can always put on a leather band until you find a metal replacement. |
