If water-proof test fails, what does it mean?

It means the watch isn't water-proof at all or it's still water-proof but not at the depth it was rated? Like for a Sub if the test fails, it means I cannot even wash my hands with it or the water-proof rate just drops below 300 m, maybe drops to 200 m?

Thanks.

If it fails there is a problem that should be solved no matter what they told you. If a Sub can't go for what
it says, then it should be fixed even if you can take it in the shower.

More information is needed to understand what excatly the watch has failed at, but like Jocke has said it needs to be repaired :-)

Thanks. I just wonder because we cannot test it everyday, right? So if it fails I think that should mean it just cannot pass the pressure at the rated depth, but it is still water-proof at some level of depth. Could anybody please to explain the mechanism of water-proof parts? Why does it fail over time and what does it mean when it fails?

Thanks.

Water proof parts - seals for the case, crown, etc. If the watch is fitted with aftermarket parts, this may cause a failure in the pressure test, i.e., crystal, crown. Mix-match parts will also cause failures, i.e., replacement of casebacks.

Vintages may fail a low pressure test, versus a high pressure test.

There are great watchmakers that fix this problem. If it is related to pitting on the case, rust damage, etc.

I don't think you have any need to worry unless you are a diver who regularly dives. When then it would be prudent to have watch checked annually, the case seals tube and all other seals are changed as part of normal routine service. But as others have said if watch fails its rated pressure check then it would be wise to get watch checked out and keep away from full submersing in water.

It may be something that can get to 200 feet before failing
Or could be something that will let shower water in

It really depends on what is causing the failure

It means you got jacked Yo! It is not a real sub :))

Could be manythings -- cracked crystal, imprroperly screwed caseback or partially screwed crown -- maybe someone tried to change the insert and F'ed up the crystal placement.... Definitely a sign to worry.

If it is the Cellini series, then I suggest you leave the water in there ....

If it fails a pressure test, then have a qualified watchmaker look it over. Something is wrong somewhere and it could be something relatively minor.

I have every watch I buy pressure tested before I go in the water with them.
All of my watches passed too. Thankfully.

Its a small price to pay for peace of mind.
