GMTIIc not cutting it!! Help!

Ok, I am sure I will hear that I'm crazy, but I am also sure I will hear that I should go with what i feel....dilemma....

I recently posted that I bought GMT IIc after owning an older GMT II and an older Sub Date. I love the GMT IIc. BUT: I was recently in an AD and tried on the Explorer II (white face) and I am in ABSOLUTE LOVE WITH IT. It's very "me." Problems are mental: GMT's newer material and movement (I think), the ceramic and the seemingly larger diameter of the face. And the new clasp. But there is just something about the explorer II.

Any thoughts? I am seriously, very close to going in and purchasing the Explorer. I understand this may be "a step backwards" as some would say, but maybe not. HELP! and FYI: keeping both is not an option, I would have to part with the GMT IIc.

!!! HELP!

Get the one that "sings" to you. Though, beware, selling a watch these days is tough, even one barely worn. People are looking for MASSIVE discounts!

I wanted the GMTIIc for a long time, then bought one from a trusted seller here on TRF. I think its beautiful, but it was too blocky and uncomfortable on my wrist. After about a month of trying to get used to it, I decided it had to go. For that much money it has to be perfect.

It took about 3 weeks but I ended up selling it on the forums for a $200 loss after shipping. Not too bad. I did have to deal with about 15 lowball offers, mostly from dealers, which was kind of a drain.

I narrowed my replacement watch choices to the Exp II and the GMT 16710. It was a tough choice but I eventually went with a coke GMT. I still might get an Explorer II as well. I tried a few on and they look great, are comfortable & at a great price point compared to the GMT. If you like the 3186 movement you can get one in an ExpII for much less $$.

Good luck!

Go for the one you really like. I would never swap my GMTIIc for an Explorer but that's just me. If you prefer the Explorer to the GMT then flip it and enjoy.

I do agree, same for me, I absolutely prefer the GMTIIC, but if you like the Exp, then go.

If you can't decide, I would wait a week or two see how you feel. If you can't stop thinking about it, then you probably need to get the Exp.

The problem is, for many wis, we can't stop thinking about it until we get it...then, we want something else or, realize we never should have flipped it in the first place. Me, well, I love my GMTIIC. A little story here.... I went into the store near my office every couple weeks and looked at the 18 KT YG GMTIIC and subs. I was drooling for the green dial YG GMTIIC (and still am) and did not want a SS Rolex as I had my SS Breitling SuperOcean. Well, one day I decided to try on the SS GMTIIC because I really like the watch itself and knew that no way can I afford the price of a 18KT YG watch. Once I tried on the SS version...I started thinking about it more and more. Of course, it is not easy to get the Mrs to agree to let me purchase a watch, particularly on a watch that has an MSRP of 7 grand. Anyway, I finally got it and wear it almost every day in spite of having other watches to wear.

Now, fast forward to a situation similar to how you feel about your explorer desire....I love the new SS ceramic sub LV...gorgeous watch. I think the way the dial looks green, then black is a great design feature on a great watch and think it will be collectible some day. However, the only way I could even think of maybe affording it would be to sell my SS IIC or my serti sub. I'd miss both so, I am staying put. The IIC is still selling very well and may never be worth anything as a collectors item because so many are being enjoyed by the masses. But to me, it will always be iconic.

Do what makes you happy but be very sure before you make the move.

Good luck with your decision.

The GMT 2c will be around for years, but the polar Exp 2 might be done next year. If I bought another sport Rolex it would probably be a polar Exp2. I always liked that watch. Love the white face and black hands! Similar, yet very different from my SD.
I'm hoping for something new this year at at Basel. If I were you, I'd give it until Basel, if you still feel that way, sell it and get the new Exp2 or the "old" one. My deposit's ready if I feel inspired. Maybe that will be my theme, I collect recently discontinued models.

no such thing as taking a step backwards when it comes to Rolex ownership! they're both good watches and there's no shame in wanting one model over the other as long as its a Rolex!

Agreed. You're just moving sideways. Get the one you want. That's what it's all about.

Maybe you need a TT GMT IIc

Seriously, my GMT IIc is my least worn watch, the magic went almost immediately, however my TT GMT IIc was my most reluctant purchase & now its the hardest not to wear

Interesting. I'm starting to feel the same way and actually considering a TT GMTIIC. I must be getting old!

Last spring, I flipped this:

for this:

Bad mistake!

Fortunately, I was able to reacquire the EXPII and sell the GMT IIc.

Now I'm happy!

I prefer the stealthiness and "toolness" of the Explorer II. The PCLs, green "fourth hand", and ceramic bezel did not do it for me. Plus, the hack of the GMT IIc was "spongy" which RSC-Dallas said was normal - not so with the 3186 in my EXP II.

But to each, his/her own.

Patrick, I have added the TT GMTIIc to my short list for 2011; no doubt it's the quintessential "old fart's" watch, but I'm now there. It's a watch I thought I would never own -- never say never!!

Life is too short not to own one's favorite watch. Buy the white Explorer II.

Personally I'm waiting for Jan/Feb so see if they update the Explorer II line. I'd love a larger grown on that one, and updated bracelet. Hopefully we can avoid a green GMT hand...

I'm really hoping the new EXPII to have a larger orange 24 hour hand... Otherwise I may have to cancel the order..

Btw - talking about green hand for the EXPII... When will it be celebrating it's 50th anniversary?

I have both an Exp II and a GMT IIC. You are right - they are as different as night & day. However, I like them equally for different reasons.

One point to consider however, is that a new Exp II (ie M or V serial) will have the same movement as a GMT IIC - the 3186.

Dood, no such thing as taking a step backwards, even if you're going to a Casio! You should own/wear whatever watch speaks to you! Even if it costs less :)

Those of us who own and love our EXP II Polar would never consider it a step down from any watch. If you think it would be then it may not be the watch for you. Either way good luck with your decision.
