6542 gmt

Hello, first time poster here.

Attached are photos of the GMT my uncle gave me some years ago. It had not run for years, had no crystal and the red paint on the 24 hr hand was gone. I had the watch serviced and brought back to life. Eventually I replaced the original bracelet with a modern one as the links were loosening up. I have included photos of the original bracelet and another partial bracelet I acquired. I apologize for the photos, they are not high quality. The bezel is pretty worn and the face is also showing it's age, definately not pristine. After my uncle passed away the family found some GMT brochures and several business cards from Geneva jewelry/watch shops and what appears to be a sales receipt from Phillippe Beguin Chronometrie in Geneva dated 10/8/57.

Serial # is 212XXX. I also apologize for any errors in nomenclature...I love watches but am no scholar in the genre. Am looking for comments and insurance/replacement estimates.

TIA- Kent

Great watch! The Bakelite bezel looks like it has been through a lot, just the bezel itself is worth something. Here's a similar one:

A nice 6542 Bakelite with a great uncracked bezel goes for $40k or so with box and papers. A great bezel can sell for north of $20k and a super clean dial is worth a lot too. Here is one I almost bought-- This one was 100% complete with perfect dial and bezel. If this was $40k--and complete as well--that should give you some idea. It is a great watch!! Not a lot of them around!!:

Gmt

Appreciate the replies. My watch is certainly inferior to the one you showed Kyle. It is not even in the same solar system as the one posted by SteelerFan1965...I mean WOW!

But as they say about rifles: "This is my GMT, there are (not so) many like it, but this one is mine!" I love this watch. It cost me to get it running again but has been well worth it and it runs well. Plus, it makes it easy to figure out which way is north!!

New Photo

Renfield, I am making the assumption you were asking to see another photo of my GMT. If so, here is one and if not, here is one anyway (grin).

Managed to briefly get my hands on a better camera today. One of the things about holidays is that just about everyone brings theirs. So I got a somewhat better shot. But cannot equal the quality of the photos supplied by Kyle and Steelerfan.

Happy Holidays- Kent

Nice! Looks like that 6542 has quite some history with your uncle.

VERY INTERESTING!

have you had the chance to open the case back and
look at the date stamp inside, 212k is a early one.

may i ask, what line of work was your uncle in.

the bands!! a LARGE LOGO oyster and a expandable what
appears to be marked GF

a thought, if your are gonna wear it often. think about
(and i hate to say this) getting a "aftermarket" bezel
if yours breaks off. it will cost you THOUSANDS'S

VERY NICE!!

Why are some of the numbers on the date wheel black and the "22" at least is red??

It's called a roulette date wheel. They alternate black and red.

Ha!

Hey Racer X, glad you like it....I almost used "Stu Pahdidyit", but it's even closer to the truth and I decided against it.

Hey Blaine

Blaine, I realized I did not resond to your questions.

Have not had the back off it personally, but when it was serviced I had the dealer note serial # and movement #.

My uncle dabbled in a lot of things, getting his start when his electrical company got a govt. contract for soldering irons during WWII. He liked to buy real estate because he said, "Land is the one thing they aren't making more of....except in Hawaii when a volcano erupts!". He was an avid private pilot until he lost his medical; his last plane was a Ryan Navion.

I hear you about the bezel, have been thinking about it a lot since coming here. I am generally a clumsy person and rarely wore it before because I knew it was a vintage watch, but didn't truly know what I had. Am coming to the conclusion that this particular watch needs a better home.

Well, I do have some more photos, have been obsessed with trying to get something in the neighborhood of other shots I've seen here. I will post them and then not bother you all with any more.

Thanks for all the info and comments, this is a very friendly place.
