Thinking of a YM...

Hi everyone,

For the past few months I've been thinking about getting a YM (Plat and Steel) but have been put off by the price. Then last December I went to a reunion of sorts with my high school buddies and one of my good friends was wearing one. I handled it and wore it for most of the night (while he in turn wore my DJ which he found too "puny" ...what can I say, he's got big wrists) and fell in love with it.

If I choose to get one I'll have to flip one or two of my current watches. Here are my watches that see wrist time:

- Exp II (gets most wrist time)
- DJ (on the average around twice a week)
- GMT II (around twice a month)
- Tudor Hydronaut II (doesn't get any right now)
- several Omegas, of which the Speedy Pro only gets active wrist time.

I'm thinking of flipping the GMT II and the Hydro, plus perhaps an Omega. The thing is, I don't know if it'll be worth it. I know it all depends on me and what smiles to me, but still and all I would love to hear from YM owners or those who have considered YM's as well on what they think.

Thanks,

Glimmer

The Yacht-Master is awesome.

Definitely worth getting for the beautifully contoured case, the maxi dial, platinum dial and red accents.

It's very comfortable.

I have a YM Plat/Steel and love it.

Yes, you wouldn't take it yacht racing with you, but i know so many people who have subs and don't take it diving. One dodgy seal and your watch is toast! :-)

I like the YM Plat/Steel because it is not instantly recognisable as a rolex. And there is something special about wearing something that is not so obvious that is really cool.

You can wear it out without being a target in a bar/restaurant. I have friends with Subs and speedmasters that have been targeted for their watch in the past. Also again wearing to work without the politics either formally or with something casual.

Don't get me wrong, i'd love the new sub with the green bezel, but I have no regrets on my plat/steel YM :-)

The case of the YM makes it seem larger than 40mm, if I'm not mistaken...

I have the same opinion...the YM just looks really "neutral" and yet has a lot of class. I hope I can find a really good deal...and I do right yachts once in a while, so I might really get a chance to use it

I am a brand new Yacht-Master owner. It is my first and only Rolex - and I put a lot of time and consideration into choosing this watch over others. What it really came down to was when I tried it on, it just smiled at me and it sounds like the same happened to you when you tried your friends on.

Many experts may disagree, but for me it's the perfect combination of sport, dress, individuality and versatility. I can wear it to work, in a suit, with a north face jacket or t-shirt and I feel it "fits" for all occasions.

What really was the clincher for me was the the platinum dial and bezel. It goes with everything and for someone like me who doesn't have a collection yet - that is what I wanted. It goes with black, navy, brown or any other color. In addition I can put any color band/strap on it if I wanted to (brown or black leather, red nato, you name it) - Platinum goes with everything!!

My 2 cents, hope you enjoy whatever you decide to get!

Hey Clarence, how have you been buddy? I say, flip the ones you don't wear. Over the last year I probably got rid of 10 or more nice watches that I wore like you wear yours, and acquired 2 that I wear all the time. There are brief moments that I miss them, but I get so much more use out of the ones I have now. I'm over my collector days and trying to build a big collection. I was always a one or two watch guy before I found watch forums, and that is pretty much what I've returned to. The only reason I'd say keep the GMT II is because it is somewhat more "collectible" since it is discontinued. But ... a watch that you don't wear isn't doing you much good. Nothing that you listed can't be found again easily should you want one back. - David

X2, or x3, I guess. I have had the ladies' SS/platinum YM for almost 10 years, and love it. It goes with anything, dressy, business, casual, etc.

I had a Yachtmaster and I sold it. I sold it as I have watches coming and going most of the time. I figured there is more where that came from. There are only two watches that I sold and then had to get back: Speedmaster Professional, and Sea-Dweller. I really, really miss the Yachtmaster. It is a great watch, comfortable, perfect weight, aggressive turned down lugs, and definitely a whole other level of refinement than the other sport models.

Now since you wore the Yachmaster in the evening, then you may be unaware of the best part. When the dial is in direct sunlight is seems to refract the light indifferent directions, it is a sparkle-glow. No other dial I know of plays with direct sunlight like the YM.

Hi Clarence...

I recently purchased a YM just last week.
I've owned many watches, Rolex and others but usually seem to wear no more than 2 in rotation.
The YM is fantastic, Extremely versatile and has the feel of being even more than a sport or profesional watch.
IMO it is more comfortable that a Sub or GMT and has a really nice weight due to the platinum. It sits perfectly on the wrist and the case is beautifully refined to conform to the wearers wrist and the touch of red on the dial makes it just perfect.
Well enough of my rambling. You can tell how I feel about it. I say go for it. Sell one or two that rarely get any wrist time.

SS Plat YM is a stunning stunning watch...
I got my wife a midsize when she fell in love with it.

Price wise, I would not pay list for one, but you should find most ADs willing to do a deal on one.

I got around 20% off my wifes and she wouldnt change it for anything else.

If I had the money I would buy a matching full size :)
Buy it and enjoy :)

First of all, you shouldn't let price put you off. They don't seem to hold value as well as some other models, so you should be able to pick one up in great condition for $5000.

I have just worn one non-stop for the last two weeks, here's my two cents. I use all my watches whenever and for whatever I feel like, I don't have any saved for particular occasions. However, this may change for the YM. It is not as functional compared to the Explorer II, it is very low contrast making reading time difficult in low light, and I really miss the GMT hand. If you need to let something go, get rid of the ones you don't wear!

The one other aspect to mention is size. The Explorer II works great as a stealthy daily wearer and feels just perfect in size. Compared to the only other similar watch I have worn though, the supercased TT Sub, the YM is just a tad on the small size.

Oh, and if you fall off your yacht and happen to sink to 30 or 40 meters, you don't need to worry about your watch. :-)

I couldn't have said it better. I own a Yacht-Master and I took a lot of time debating what watch to get. In the end, for me it felt and looked the best based on what I was looking for. I wanted a Rolex that was unique but could be worn with everything. I wear suits everyday at work and it fits perfect. I can then throw on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and it still fits. I have about 8 other non-Rolex watches and I can't do that with those. Plus when you are outside and the sun hits it your really appreciate the dial and bezel. It is also very comfortable and the perfect size for me.

You can obviously tell I am a fan, and from what I have seen on the forum most of us that own this watch are very satisfied with it.

Good luck on your purchase.

Thanks,

Glimmer
i would keep the dj as a dress watch and the gmt as it has a black dial. for me the exp ii is very similar to the ym (i'd prefer the ym) and i am no fan of the hydronaut. the speedy pro is a keeper.

When I go yacht racing I tend to use an old Swiss Military watch, something that can take a few knocks without worry. But then I am an agressive sailor and hate to loose! Would recommend a Casio G-Shock (or sim) for actual yacht racing. Would keep the YM for gentle sailing on the harbour or back at the marina.

The most comfortable watch after the Exp II

You'll love the dial!

Hi. I have had my DJ for 26 years now, hasnīt missed a beat, but I wanted a new Rolex and after debating with myself for a long time decided on the Yachtmaster. I tried it on at my local AD and I was sold. It is absolutely stunning, and as many of you have pointed out, it goes with everything. I also wanted a "different" Rolex, I see the Subs everywhere, I canīt remember seeing a singel yachtmaster yet.
