Thoughts on Manual Wind

Hi everyone. I have almost ready every recent thread here to get a guage on which PAM I want to be my first and I keep jumping between a few of them. I guess that is the pain you go through with such lovely watches.

I wish that I could get them all but right now I have narrowed them down to a couple.

One question I had from everyone on the forum is, what are your thoughts on the manual wind. One of the ones I am looking at is the 111 and when I spoke to someone about the watch and pricing they basically told me don't get it because I will get tired of the manual wind and will have to wind it everyday. Also said that a lot of people make that mistake in getting 111 and suggested a few other models that were automatic.

From what I have read on the board there are a lot of you guys with the 111 and feel it's a nice watch but want to know what the first hand thoughts are.

I don't want to mention the other ones I am looking at that way It keeps me from on the right track of getting info on each watch and making the decisions based on everything I read and then ultimately pulling the trigger.

Thank you for your help in advance.

You either like to wind or you don't. It isn't that tough of a question. I have several watches and I have both Manual and Auto. You have to set the time and wind them anyway.

That's the thing. I haven't had either of them so wondering how bad the winding is.

The manual winding isnīt bad at all. You need to give your watch a couple of seconds "of love" every other day... I donīt have any manual at the moment, but must say that I never felt that were any pain, I actually liked it.

Regarding the model I must say that the 111 is probably one of my favourites of the PAMs in that price-range. The sandwich-dial is nice. I wouldīve gotten the 111, the 164 (love the dial and the brushed case) or save up for the 312 with 1950-case (NICE!) an in-house movement...

Apples to Oranges I prefer automatic, but there is nothiong wrong with winding your watch. I have a 292 and I actually enjoy winding it every day or every other day, reminds me how sweet the watch is!

the 111 needs winding every 2 days,I can't leave it that long so wind every day to keep it topped up,it's one of the best things about the 111,autos need winding and setting if not worn most of the time, and if you are not very active may stop anyway.nothing hard giving it a wind first thing in the morning just before you put it on.

+1 to that. I have a 183 and a LE Omega Speedmaster Pro that both require winding. Neither have dates so I dont mind at all. If it was a model with the date I can see how it would bother me.

with or without the date makes no difference, unless you were to let it wind down to a stop, which would be no difference to an auto wind watch.

I meant when winding from stop. Setting the time is a 2 sec operation - setting the date and time probably would take 5 sec

There really isnt a huge difference, but the date will take longer to set than just the time - that's all I meant. Also, I keep my auto's on a winder when not on the wrist (and when I remove from winder I wind them) - so it rare they go to a dead stop.

See the dealer I was talking to said the 111 only has a 1 day reserve. A 2 day reserve is not bad.

Something to bear in mind about the 111 is that it does not hack, i.e. the hands keep moving even when the crown is pulled out. For some, this is not a problem (along with manual winding) and suits the 'relaxed' nature of the watch. Others may not be so keen.

Some of the in-house movements e.g. in the 320 and 233 have a zero-reset function whereby the second hand returns to zero/12 when the crown is pulled out to set the time.

That was my thought or like a lot of ADs doesn't know that much about his product, read up on here and next time you visit an AD you'll give a little chuckle to yourself with their mis-information.

Yeah I have been on here and a couple other forums as well as paneristi.com to see all the models and history to get some background on the watch. I have always wanted one but just like anything I buy no matter what I do a lot of research and use forums.

Wife thinks I'm crazy cause I'm always on the automobile forums learning each and every quirk on my car to fix it myself and now I'm on this forum reading all the posts and she is like "My god, still reading"

This forum alone has made my change my mind on which watch I want at least 3 times just by reading and seeing wrist shots etc.

Always love teaching someone that is trying to sell me something. Love the look on their face and how they try and retract statements lol.

Definintely a great resource and thanks to everyone here.

My 005 is a winding watch. I would prefer an auto if I was to do it over again.

Manual wind is closer to historic Panerai.

Well, I love my 111. The manual wind is a breeze - especially with no date to set!

Love the sandwich dial and classic look!

I prefer automatic just because I don't have to wind it everyday but everyones different I personally would get annoyed after the first week most likely lol :) but the Pam 111 looks very nice!

I enjoy winding my 292. I thought it would be a draw back, but frankly rotating four watches has me setting at least once a week, so touching the watches has become necessary. Shoot, I was my car and change the oil, the least I can do is take 30 seconds to set and wind my time pieces.

There are def pros and cons to it. I like the manual wind watches as they are more in line with the history of Panerai. That said, I have looked down 2 times in the last month to see my watch stopped.

Don't care for accuracy as I wear a BASE 99% of the time. It takes a little getting used to but the interaction with your watch daily or bi-daily is a nice thing.

I like to wind but sometimes i think that 50+ turns to get my pam 0 full charged is a little overkill every 2 days.

I just happen to have a my Zero lying around which needed winding. It took me 68 seconds to wind from fully empty to fully wound.

By comparison, I did this same test on my 233 and it took me 90 seconds to wind from zero to 8 days of PR.

I like a manual wind. It gives you and chance to connect with your watch everyday. I could be because I can remember when all watches were that way.

It's just like brushing your teeth or changing your clothes. Make it a part of your routine and enjoy playing with your watch.

so true....

Winding the watch is a no brainer, as a matter of fact it's kinda nice to get in the habit to wind it at the same time everyday. When I wear my 111 I wind it first thing in the morning... the 111 is a great piece!

As Marty said a couple of posts up its kinda therapeutic...
