I wouldn't mind owning one, and if someone wants to give me one go ahead. I would be more than happy to give it a good home.

Was in an AD recently, talking about Subs (proper ones, not the Sub C) and he reckoned the ones with lug holes are "more collectable".

not lug holes

lug holes are on the outside of the case on older models.

Did all sport models shift from lug holes to not in the same year? If so, which year? If not, what was the year they changed for each model?

Submariner? (I know ND still has lug holes)
GMT?
Daytona?
Explorer II?
Yachtmaster?
SD?

That's one of the few drawbacks of the Deep Sea...no lug holes. I have my 5512 for that though.

They go along well with vintage pieces. But I prefer my contemporaries with out them.

That seems counter to the fact that there are more out there with lugs. Take the Sub for example. They were made for decades with lugs, but for a relatively short period of time without before moving to the Sub C.
