why is the sub so iconic
what is it about the sub that makes it so popular? there are so many choices, but the sub sounds like its the overwhelming choice......just wondering why and how it got to be so iconic over the other rolex watches

Because it is a never-out-of-fashion, robust, precise, perfect all day watch with 58 years of history!

An unbelievably timeless design. I'd bet good money they are still being made in roughly the same design in 2111.

It was the first true diver's watch (just narrowly beating the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms), and that initial design was spot on - simple, legible, robust, and would go on to really make Rolex into the brand it is today. It's one of those watches that changed everything

The Submariner is a substantial looking design which is in harmony with today's consumers casually sporty wardrobes. Also, this model is instantly recognizable as a Rolex.

For me, I love the blue on blue look. I used to dive in a big black steel tube, and I was born in 1953.

I wasnt trying to say ppl are wrong for loving this watch.... I myself want one and will have one at some point in my life..... the submariner is nothing but sweetness.....but so are the other rolex models.... I love them all and wish I could own one of each :).... its just the sub is so dominant in popularity over the others and was wondering why it got to be like that...... by most opinions, the sub is a do all, be all watch...... I guess you cant do much better than that .... and maybe I answered my own question

There are really very few references that have the history of the Submariner. Combine that with a design that has stood the test of time with very little change over the years reguarding functionality and you have a watch that defines the term iconic.
It stands among a handfull of watches that are truly carry "the right stuff'. |

Perfect design in conception and in reality. Many icons are the result and function of timing, luck and greatness.

I think it's also got something to do with the fact a certain James Bond, played by Sean Connery wore one. That's how my local AD sold it to me! As well as being a classic and much imitated design, it's been seen as a 'cool' watch for as long as I can remember, with no shortage of famous people seen wearing it (check out Jakes Rolex blog to see what I mean!)

Because James Bond cosigned it! First automatic dive watch, proven history, design and reliability and like Ken said just look at it!!!

I never realized how iconic it was until I finally bought my first Submariner. It is such a stunning watch. Buy one and I am sure it will win you over.

When a design endures years upon years.
When a watch is copied by every major watch brand. When a watch is instantly recognizable. When you become the first official "dive watch." You are then a Rolex Submariner. Classic, perfection. |

Every submariner has lead a different life, every sub is a little different. For a watch that hasn't changed much in 60 years, there are more choices and variations than one would expect.
This is the fifth picture of a Submariner in this thread, and so far no two have looked alike.

Iconic? I think the Datejust is sold in greater numbers and I see two or three DJs to every Subbie. I do think most members here on TRF are young males so a more sporting model, like the Subbie is popular. Society in general is more sporty these days.

The DJ may be sold in higher numbers but it is not iconic. The Sub is easily recognized by a lot of non WIS people. You say Submariner you think... Rolex, You say Date Just you think... What?
