Which DJs DO NOT have the roulette wheel?
Is there a way to know, ahead of time, which DJ comes with an all-black date wheel?
I've got a thing for the TT Rose gold TOG with the black dial, in addition to most of the other models. But prefer not to be distracted by a red date on alternate days. |

All I know is that the roulette date wheel does not appear on all models, but from my perspective, the alternating colors are hardly a distraction. I admit that I prefer the roulette date wheel from a historical perspective, but I really don't pay that much attention to it.
It's just that when I do notice, I like it. You could check with your AD. When I ordered my 116200, I was asked if I preferred the roulette date wheel and I replied that I did. That suggests that there was a choice in the matter.

It is quite common for ADs to 'dial swap' DJs in their store to satisfy a customers particular preference for dial/bracelet/bezel combo. So it's likely that a Roulette could show up anywhere. As to what comes Roulette from the factory - I don't know.

Odd red, even black. A very definite pattern.

I thought that the TOG came with the red date wheel..
I'll admit though, I am not much up on the DJ models......

If you look in the dials section of the master catalogue, the dials that come with the roulette date wheel are marked with an asterisk on the page opposite the depictions. If memory serves, roulette wheels only come on the steel models, whilst the TOG has an all-red datewheel

My Y-serial TOG had an all-black date wheel.
I've found a couple Rolex Master Catalogs online, but haven't seen date wheel info. However, as far a ADs altering the product shipped to them, locally the ADs have said they do not swap components. If someone has the full-resolution Master Catalog, I'd be glad to go about hosting it. The only pages I've yet seen are reduced-size pages. |

I had no idea that Rolex offered different coloured date wheels. I had just assumed that they were all white. Has anyone got any pictures?

Seriously, go in and point to a DJ and say "I like that one,but I like this other dial better"; they'll swap it for you - they did mine.

No, just the DJ line - in my experience.

No, the wheels are not always white. Some of them have a gold tinge to them. When I had the dial on my TT DJ changed, the date wheel was also changed, so as to complement the new dial (black with gold stick markers) better.

I see other posts talking about having the date wheel switched out--is that considered an OK thing to do? Will it hurt the value of the watch, since you're changing the original factory configuration? |

There may be three date-wheel threads going on at once right now! [whew!]
Anyway, a question I asked on the other was: Aside from the first, vintage models, do all Rolex watches of the last couple of decades use RED-ODD BLACK-EVEN roulette wheels? So, if someone posts a pic with a black odd date, one knows it is an all-black datewheel? And, conversely, if one posts a pic with a red even date, one knows it is an all-red datewheel? |

As for having dials or datewheels swapped, it won't hurt the value of the watch at all. Although I think the guarantees in the US are different, over here, they don't list what dial the watch originally comes on, and Rolex offer a free dial change on a DJ in the first three months of owning it, as well as offering dial changes (for an additional fee) during a service. The only time the value of a watch is hurt because of the dial is if it is a non-Rolex aftermarket part, of which there are a lot about - you have to be so, so careful, especially when buying an older DJ. Hope this helps! Chris |
